My partner opened a designer resale boutique earlier this year, and I program the music for the store (which is really fun).

The Christmas season is coming up, and my plan is to give him a mix he can use that's about 40 percent holiday-themed music, with the rest just regular store music.  To give you an idea what the store's soundtrack sounds like, the base is upbeat, electronic music, mostly "old" stuff.  Artists in heavy rotation include:  Pet Shop Boys, St. Etienne, Pizzicato Five, Gus Gus, Passion Pit, Washed Out, Deee-Lite and Goldfrapp.  There's also a bunch of disco, acid house, early 90s house, Hi-NRG, '60s girl groups, '60s Motown and other random bits thrown in there, including lots of remixes.

I'm just starting to track down some appropriate Christmas music and I'm looking for any/all suggestions the fine folks of Excellent might have to share.

Thanks!
Ross

OMG you basically have my dream job.

Since you mentioned Goldfrapp, do you know their "Winter Wonderland" cover? And of course the PSB Christmas EP?

>>> OMG you basically have my dream job. <<<

I've ALWAYS wanted to do something like this, and it's been a blast.  That said, the pay (nothing) could be better. :)

I didn't know about the Goldfrapp song, I'll track that down.  I've got the PSB EP.  I've also got the Low Christmas album (although that may be too downbeat) and the Polyphonic Spree album, Phil Spector's Christmas album and some "OC" soundtrack that's all weird Christmas covers (I think).  Oh, and the Raveonettes song, of course.

But the Goldfrapp suggestion is perfect.  I'm assuming I probably have lots of random tracks like that (b sides, whatever) that I probably don't even realize.

Yes, that job plus pay would be perfect. Haha.

Let me know if you need the Goldfrapp cover and I'll hook you up. I'll keep thinking about other stuff too.

She Won't Be Home by Erasure (from Crackers International) and the Snow EP from Cocteau Twins both rule - you could also try the Dandy Warhols' cover of The Little Drummer Boy...

Sent from my iPhone, please excuse any fat-fingered typos

Love collecting Xmas music (specifically vinyl).

Bad Religion "Christmas Songs"

Old:
The Ventures Christmas Album

Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas (my personal favorite Xmas album, green vinyl too)

Dean and Britta with Sonic Boom - "He's coming home" single

Also, the Hype Machine will have a ton of tracks/tunes you can pillage around Thanksgiving.

Speaking of Erasure...they have a new Christmas album coming out. Haven't heard it yet, but would probably fit!

Getting more obscure now...

Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
Pink Floyd - The Thin Ice
Bush - Sound Of Winter
Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar [that whole album just sounds wintery to me, and the song translates as "Sleeping Angel", so there you go]
Mazzy Star - Flowers In December
Cure - Plainsong [not very happy lyrics, but it's gorgeous, and most people can only make out the "it's so cold..." parts anyway]
Men Without Hats - Antarctica
Led Zepplin - Immigrant Song ["we come from the land of the ice and snow..."]
Coldplay - Shiver
Sparks - Cool Places [let's not be entirely literal, now]
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
Pixies - Stormy Weather
Pixies - Winterlong [cuz...fuck Neil Young]

Woof,
Dingo
