Hey There!

I added the .xll and was able to edit my function description.
Nice job… by the way.

Now i try to unload the .xll but everytime i restart excel, the addin gets automatically loaded. If i delete the addin from the addins folder, when i start excel it will always return error for the missing addin… even if i uncheck it from the list.

This is kind of annoying… and for now i leave it there so i can load excel without error messages.

Can you guys give me some help?
Thanks in advance.

You can remove the add in by removing or renaming the corresponding OPEN key from the registry:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel\Options

That's Excel's user friendly way of removing XLL addins.

I’m guessing you are talking about the IntelliSense add-in for showing in-cell function descriptions.

There’s nothing special about how this add-in is installed or uninstalled, so the problem you’re having when getting rid of it is unusual.

Then suggestion Antonio makes, to editing the registry to remove the OPEN key might work, but as I understand it, this is the same as unchecking the add-in the the Alt+t,i add-ins dialog (you can also get to the dialog via File -> Options -> Add-Ins and then pick Manage: Excel Add-ins).

Sometimes Excel copies an add-in into the XlStart directory (I really don’t know when Excel does this).

This directory is configured here:

Graphical user interface, text, application, email

Description automatically generated

So check whether you have a path here (or something similar like an XLStart directory) which might cause the add-in to load automatically.

If you still can’t figure out how to get rid of the add-in, please write back and we can look further.

First of all, thank you for your fast reply.
Yes i was talking about the Excel-DNA intellisense to provide descriptions for my functions.

After going to the key, i realized that there was no reference to that specific addin. Check the image below:
I then opened the specific user from the HKEY_USERS and confirmed that there were a few records to open the addin. I deleted them all... and restarted excel. Excel, again created a new entry... i deleted again and after that and removing any reference on excel to the addin it was finally ok.
Thank you for your support!
Best Regards,

Hi Rui.

I had similar issues in trying to unload an xll file from Excel.
And in a corporate environment we cannot 'hack' the registry.
What worked for me is the following:
1) Deselect the xll file from Excel's AddIn manager.
2) Close Excel
3) Delete the xll file
4) Open Excel and go to the AddIn manager
5) Excel will detect the xll file is no longer there and will ask if it should be removed from the list
6) Confirm this, and the xll will no longer be shown in the AddIn manager.

It's a bit wieldy, but it does work...

Cheers, Bart

Problem: ExcelDna XLL won't unload when unchecked (and restarted). Deleting the files only results in a file missing error. The entry is still listed and checked. It simply reappears every time you start Excel.

Solution: uncheck the Analysis Toolpack - VBA add-in!
For some reason, it seems to prevent Excel from deleting other add-ins from being removed.
