There are some other posts that have directly addressed the issue of
excel freezing, but none of them seem to hit directly on my problem,
which is much more predictable.

When I attempt to debug an Excel-DNA from Visual Studio 2010, VS will
automatically launch Excel. Excel will then freeze on loading.
However, if I hit Alt-Ctrl-Del Excel will return to it's normal state
without having to re-launch the application. This Alt-Ctrl-Del
workaround was fine, although annoying, until recently when the launch
of Excel completely froze the whole computer forcing hard re-boots.
Just curious if anyone else has run into this and knows how to fix it.

My guess is that Excel-DNA is not the issue, but instead it's
something in my VS or OS settings. I'm running Windows XP Pro x64,
Visual Studio 2010, Excel 2007, and Excel-DNA 0.29. Let me know if
more information is needed, any help would be greatly appreciated.

To update this problem, I am now getting a blue screen when running in
debug. Excel will freeze, one monitor goes black, the other returns
the infamous blue screen. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joel,

This is not a problem I know of, or have seen in my environments
(Windows XP 32-bit / Visual Studio 2010 / Excel 2007) or
(Windows 7 64-bit / Visual Studio 2010 / Excel 2010 32 bit) or
(Windows Server 2008 R2 / Visual Studio 2010 / Excel 2010 64-bit).

Your Windows XP 64-bit is a very uncommon operating system.

Thanks Govert.

It's not uncommon for me to be seeing the following error upon the
launch of Excel outside of VS.

Excel experieanced a serious problem with the (.xll pathname) addin.
If you have seen this message multiple times, you should disable this
add-in and check to see if an update is available. Do you want to
disable this add-in?

Not sure if this helps - but it seems like the issue goes deeper than
a setting problem.

Hi Joel,

That message just means that Excel previously crashed while loading
the add-in. But you knew that already.

Excel puts a check before and after loading each add-in, so that it
can disable add-ins that crash it repeatedly.

So the message doesn't really have any additional information on the
problem.

Do you get this problem with very simple add-ins?
Can you test any of this on a Windows 7 (or Windows XP 32-bit)
machine?

why not move to 64 bit windows 7 ?
much more stable, and the kernel is much more highly protected than the XP kernel.

Let's just say I don't choose the OS in which I operate. Any
workarounds?

I've found if I load the add-in after the debug has started it
typically starts without issue (no need to Alt-Ctrl-Del, etc.) It just
may be that tedious.

I presume you have the latest service packs and updates installed,
both for the OS and SP 1 for Visual Studio 2010?

It sounds like it's only a problem when you're debugging.
What about installing a virtual machine with 32-bit XP just for the
debugging?

Are you up to exploring the freeze with the kernel debugger? I'm
guessing it is essentially hitting some type of breakpoint in Excel,
and not dealing with the debugger attach correctly.

I trust you'll forgive me if I don't plan to look for a 64-bit version
XP to try this myself ;-)

Govert,

Thanks for the advice. I got the blue screen while stepping through a
function today, this is definitely an annoying problem. It's
definitely only happening when debugging. I am up-to-date with service
packs and the such. It'd more than hitting a breakpoint - the whole
application freexes up and can't move anything. Let me know if anyone
has found a fix or encountered this before. Thanks.
