PRACTICE TODAY~
Parents~ It is going to be another hot day today, but we are still having practice!
    Pack your athletes several bottles of hydration (If they are frozen or have lots of ice at the begining of practice they will melt and be cool by the end of practice).

*Plan is to bike, run and talk about race day strategy.
* Park bike outside front of pool.
* We are going to do a quick dip into the pool to cool ourselves off.
* Next we will grab our bikes and head down to tower park.
* We will have home base near the bathrooms in the shade and near a water fountain in case anyone needs extra water.
* You can pick your athlete up at the lower parking lot @ 5:30pm.

RACE WEEKEND:
Excel will have a tent/banner set up, so parents and athletes can place their stuff in it during the race.
I still have not heard word on the youth development team. My thoughts are if they have a practice Saturday after the race that our team will stay and watch them.
If they don't have practice after the duathlon then you should come down to the race on Sunday and watch them in action. I will keep you posted on anything I hear from the youth development coach.

From George and Cathy Allen (Parker's grandparents)
George has qualified for the World Championship Ironman race in Kona, so I trust his advice regarding the course.

We will go over this information at practice tomorrow and before the race Saturday.
To make sure your athlete understands the race strategy, go over this information at home with them too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cathy, Parker and I attended the HEAT practice preview of the race for this coming weekend.  Here are the facts:
1.  The only flat part of the race is the swim
2.  The bike is very technical and very hilly as compared to the previous races.  Half of the practice participants walked their bikes up one hill.  Remember LOW gear - HIGH CADENCE.  Get in LOW gear before you start the uphill.
3.  The run which is last, comes after the very difficult bike, and is hillier then the bike!  top that off with very humid and hot conditions there will be a lot of walking rather than running.  This is what occurred during the practice.  Practice 50% going uphill, 75% on the flats and downhill, and 85% in the last 1/4 mile.
4.  HYDRATION will be a key for this race, as there were lots of walkers clutching at their side from pain.
5.  Train SMART - Race HARD.
