Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood PDF File ~ Born a Crime: Stories From a South African childhood written by the famous South African comedy writer/ performer Trevor Noah is an amazing comedy book about growing up in a poor family and going to great lengths to cover his crimes for the police by growing up as a petty thief. The book was initially released as a book/ CD where Noah relates stories about growing up in a low income neighborhood and later on going to college and getting a degree in English. The book won a Writers Award for Best Comedy Writing at the British Independent Festival in 2021 and was later released as a movie. The movie has received warm critical reviews thus far and is expected to be a box office hit once it hits theaters. The book's story begins when Noah (Trevor Noah) is seven years old and starts out with his friends hanging around after his mother tells them not to. But soon enough, he begins to steal from his own father and friends as well and soon finds himself standing in the dock on the day of his birthday expecting to be arrested because of his crimes.
As the story unfolds, we find out that Noah hasn't committed any of his crimes yet, but soon enough the local police discover some discrepancies in his story. The local newspaper then prints the results of a sting operation where a detective infiltrates a criminal's home and pretends to search for evidence while performing a drug test on Noah. The detective soon discovers that Noah has actually been framed for a series of bank robberies and is on the run from the law. With the help of his friend Luke (Modern Family's Jason Gann), Noah runs away from his house while avoiding capture while using his newly found talents to con the police into letting him live so he can complete his book.
The book starts out with a story told through a journal where Noah expresses his fear and desire to become a success story. After a series of bank robberies, the local authorities discover some evidence pointing to Noah as a suspect, however, he continues to elude their attempts. Frustrated, the police begin to look for Noah, but they are unable to find any evidence to link him to any crime. Out of nowhere, a newly assigned state trooper named Tommy enters the investigation who seems to know more about the case than anyone else. In this author's debut novel, Born a Crime, Davis manages to bring in a number of different characters to develop an intriguing plot that makes for great reading.

Review Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Noah Rashid. In this enjoyable and informative book, the author covers a host of issues surrounding the criminal justice system in South Africa, his experiences as an incarcerated teenager, the role of media, and his own personal philosophies regarding hope, forgiveness, and redemption. The book is chock full of originality as each chapter contains at least one story that is different and perhaps more unique than the others. There are forty-some diverse stories that range from the tragic to the inspirational and many other genres. Additionally, the book contains videos, photos, and supplemental materials as well.
The first chapter of the book takes place in prison. It chronicles the author's two prison years, during which he served a lengthy sentence for burglary. During this time, he was repeatedly assaulted by other inmates while in prison. The physical abuse was so severe that he developed infections and broken bones.
Another chapter of the book chronicles the author's time as a teenager in foster care. There he was constantly bullied by other boys because of his disability. He was also sexually abused. Though he was not a child anymore, his experience left an indelible impression on him as he grew up to be an effective and strong advocate for disabled persons and a lifelong human rights activist.
The third chapter takes us inside the private criminal justice system of South Africa. The author profiles three convicted sex offenders who were released from jail after serving time. They share their stories of how they learned about the system, the perils they encountered in jail, and what lessons they have learned from their mistakes. Through their stories, we can see the myriad of potential dangers that can happen when an innocent or vulnerable person goes to trial for a crime.
The fourth chapter of the book chronicles the author's personal journey towards becoming a lawyer. While still a student at the University of Cape Town, he realized that he had a calling that needed to be devoted to. He then pursued this passion with the support of a mentor and colleagues who shared his passion. This eventually led to the formation of the Transvaal Women's Legal Aid Society, now known as the Afriana Foundation.
Following the end of the first two chapters, we move to the third chapter which takes us inside the private criminal courtrooms of Cape Town. We learn more about how people are convicted of crimes in the courtroom through conversations with some of the defendants and judges. The author tells us the names of the accused and the crime for which they were convicted. He shares his own experiences in a story about a case where he represented a person who was accused of murder. Borna relates the horrific events leading to his client's conviction and the role he played as a defense attorney before he was ultimately acquitted of the crime.
The fourth chapter chronicles the author's years as a practicing criminal defense attorney. We hear from some former clients who describe their experiences in detail. We see the criminal charges brought against some defendants, what they did to avoid conviction and the devastating effects that these charges had on their lives.
