Fraternal greetings to you all from all of us at IYCS International Secretariat

I just joined this group, we at the IYCS International Secretariat are very happy to know that there is already an existing group like this 

May I start this conversion by wishing you and yours, a very blissful Lenten season and joyful Easter in Advance

To start with, it could be interesting to refresh our memory of each other, in that case, we would love to know where you are and what you are currently doing?

Secondly, we at the International Secretariat have been talking with some former members around the world of the possibilities of organizing the second International reunion for IYCS former members in Rome along with the Global Training Session/International Committee meeting of IYCS which is scheduled to hold from 20 - 30 September, 2018. We would love to know if you interested and what kind of TOPICS you would love to discuss during the meeting

Salutations fraternelles à vous tous de la part de tous les membres du Secrétariat International de la JECI,

Je viens juste de rejoindre ce groupe, et sachez que nous (au Secrétariat International de la JECI) sommes très heureux de savoir qu’il existe un tel groupe. 

Mais d’abord, puis-je commencer cette conversation en vous souhaitant sincèrement un très heureux Carême et de joyeuses Pâques à l’avance.

Cela pourrait être intéressant de rafraîchir nos mémoires et nous serions ravis de savoir où vous êtes en ce moment et ce que vous faites dans la vie…  Deuxièmement, nous ( le Secrétariat International) avons parlé avec certains anciens membres dans le monde des possibilités d’organiser la deuxième réunion internationale des anciens de la JECI à Rome à l’occasion de la Session de formation Internationale/Comité International de la JECI qui devrait se tenir du 20-30 septembre 2018. Nous aimerions savoir si vous seriez intéressés et quel genre de sujets vous aimeriez discuter lors de cette réunion.

Au demeurant je peux en rajouter en lui faisant individuellement copie de mon message, et

vous communiquant par la même occasion son contact.

NB. Germaine est sur place à  Paris et donc plus facilement  joignable pour vous 

que le président  du RAJA Rangar ou le Secrétaire général que je suis.

J'ai été présente à la 1ère assemblée des anciens de la JECI en 2012 et j'en garde un très bon souvenir quantu au contenu des communications , que des personnes rencontrées. 

Les anciens présents avaient demandé que soit renouvelée l'expérience  (sous la houlette du secrétariat international et quelques délégués désignés). 

Il y a eu quelques  échanges après Rome et puis plus rien. 

Je loue l'initiative,  et les thèmes sont nombreux au vue de mutations au sein de l'Église,  de l'environnement, dans la société en général. 

Vous pourrez aussi voir avec Édouard Koutsava,  secrétaire du bureau JECI de l'époque qui fut organisateur de la session et ensuite chargé du suivi. 

Je reste disponible si besoin.

Thank you for your initiative in contacting us ex-members, Richard.  May the God's grace be with you as well during this Lenten season.

By way of introduction, I was on the IYCS Asian Team from 1989-1992 with Sanjeewa Liyanage and Victor Gomes. But I am now in the Washington DC area where I work as Director of Education and Diversity Programs at the Ecological Society of America where I run mentoring programs for underserved students and faculty to promote ecology careers and advance ecology education. I have recently been in touch with other ex-members of Cardijn movements - which include both former YCW and YCS. We have an organization called Cardijn Associates in the US. The group has been dormant for many years but we are trying to revive it. We commemorated the 50th anniversary of the death of Cardinal Cardijn last October with a Mass. Currently, we are involved in organizing a conference focused on  Lay Movements as Structures of Grace:  The Legacy of Cardijn, the See-Judge-Act Method, and Catholic Action in the Americas

Like Germaine, I attended the ex-YCS members meeting in Rome and likewise, have fond memories of that gathering.  It is amazing that so many years have gone by. Let me share the final declarations in English and French from that meeting here. I don't know if there is a Spanish version. Richard - is it possible to have it translated? 

It is good to hear that the IS is interested in organizing another gathering of ex-YCS. I think it is a wonderful idea to hold it in conjunction with the International Committee meeting. 

The last meeting focused on Global Governance. Subsequently, there was a thought to organize the next one to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Vatican II. Unfortunately, that did not work out.  

In the final declaration is a set of recommendations, pasted below, which might be inspiration for topics and help provide continuity from the first meeting. It would be good to look closely at some of these recommendations and ask - what do we mean by this (e.g. paradigm shift or common drivers, support formation of clergy), what has been happening, how have we contributed to these (as individuals and as part of existing networks in our own areas). We can then begin to think about some collective action if that is possible. It would also be good to see how our reflections might coordinate with or support the YCS movement today.

As a former member of the IYCS International Advisory Body for many years, I also strongly hope to see ex-YCS members discuss the role we can play in supporting the sustainability of the movement into the future. We all grew and benefited from our international YCS experience. Funding agencies are less and less likely to support projects for the international work of the movement. It is time for ex-members to step up and think carefully about this reality. So I hope this upcoming meeting would be an opportunity to lay out some ideas and plans together with the International Committee.

Recommendations from the final statement of the ex-YCS members meeting in Rome 2011: 

We are committed to continue to analyze the current world (“see”), being attentive to new elements, analyzing this new situation in the light of the liberating Gospel and the social teaching of the Church (“judge”). To realize this commitment, we will work (act”):

1. To promote a paradigm shift that brings us closer to a civilization and world citizenship based on love and respect.
   
2. To express and articulate common drivers for joint action programs through dialogue with people of good will and other faiths.
   
3. To support the formation of the clergy, and especially chaplains in Catholic Action movements on their role in deepening interreligious and intercultural dialogue.
   
4. To contribute towards greater coherence of UN policies, programs, and institutions, that will empower the most vulnerable peoples, informed by the values of the Gospel, especially in IYCS representation in the relevant UN bodies and the Holy See.
   
5. To support and strengthen the work of the IYCS in leadership formation in parishes, schools and universities at all levels, with the expertise and experience of former YCS members.
   
6. To create an international forum of former members for continued reflection.
   
7. To organize regular international meetings of former YCS members with increased participation of people from different cultural backgrounds and women.
