Well, here we are.  I just figured out about 45 minutes ago that Textdrive is deceased.  Haven't used it much for the last year - mostly switched over to gmail, and not doing much websiting these days...

...BUT I would like my data.  I have a backup I made last year (haven't changed anything since) - pretty sure I used some sort of backup tool in virtualmin.  Now I have a big ol tarball and no idea what to do with it.  My wee computer does not understand what the files are.  Unzip it on some new web server somewhere, when I've got one?  Call in the tech support cavalry (because I am over my head here)?  Throw it on the floor and stomp on it?

I would post this on the textdrive forums, but it won't recognize my password (although it will issue me new ones over and over and then tell me they're incorrect)....

Thanks for any help!  What a weird feeling that it might all just be... gone.

I wouldn't say it's officially dead yet. but prognosis not good.

More information  is needed  in order to try and help.

What was your last server? was it on the New Textdrive 2 or the older ones i.e.  joyent or heavens forbid the old  original textdrive?

you say you "have a big ol tar ball"  what does the file end with .TAR? What is yr computer ? Windows? Mac?

all kinds of utilities will open or untar yr  tar'd files.

Can you logon to your virtualmin? ssh into yr server? or access your stuff via PHPMyAdmin?

What @Bici said. We could use more info. That being said, if you have the tar ball, you might be able to ship it to someone who could figure out the unzipping or un-tarring or whatever. I'm pretty sure either @Bici or I could work out the details.

What kind of web sites did you have? Were they just static html files, or were they something like TextPattern or WordPress. If the latter, then you'll also need the data bases. Backing them up is different from backing up your files, but again, either of us can likely help.

Probably your first step is to find a new web host. Both @Bici and I have moved a bunch of our stuff to WebFaction, so we could help you if you decide to land there. Somewhere else on this forum, I've posted a link to a discount coupon for them. If it's still good, you could get a year's hosting from WebFaction for about $52, or something close to that. Ah, here it is,  [http://slickdeals.net/f/5989592-webfaction-hosting-50-off-1yr-65-off-3yrs].

Another option for a new host is to stick with something similar to what you've had, which would make it more familiar. Our former sysadmin, @jacques, is setting up a textdrive refugee service [http://www.kaizengarden.co/lp/textugees]. I think, however, there's a bit of work still to be done to get things up and running smoothly, hence my current digs at WebFaction.

The only thing I'm concerned about in the whole lump is my Textpattern blog.  (There's a bunch of other stuff in there, but all of it exists elsewhere.)  I was on Jervis, which I believe was (heaven forbid) the old original textdrive, and at any rate, doesn't seem to exist right now.

(I have not tried logging on to virtualmin or PHPMyAdmin, mainly because I've forgotten how.  But Jervis SFTP, webmail and any other connections I've tried all seem dead, so I haven't tried to hard to remember.)

Attached is a screenshot of what's in the tarball.  Anything prefaced with hannahmaeblair can be ignored (there's not much there anyway), as well as the mail under ravenousplankton.com.  The blog was at ravenousplankton.com.  It worked fine until the changeover in late 2012 or early 2013 or whenever that was.  After the changeover, it looked weird, but the content seemed to be there, and I was assured (ha ha etcetera) that it all was.  That was the point at which I did this backup, which, as I say, was done with some kind of virtualmin tool, if I remember right.  Is there any kind of hope atall?

(You know, this was always my favorite part about textdrive - helpful and patient fellow users.  Thanks, y'all.)
