I'm curious, did anybody else besides me get this email from Dean? Has anybody clicked through to the "stripped down" developer portal? Any interesting information there before making a yes/no decision?

Dear Trevor Johns

As you know, Joyent will soon cease providing shared hosting services. In recent weeks I've been readying the relaunch of TextDrive (the company I started in 2004, which subsequently became Joyent) as a shared hosting provider open to the public. The new TextDrive shall also offer replacement hosting to existing Joyent accounts.

The process has been exciting and chaotic, and I can say things are looking great: I've been serving websites and data feeds from the new infrastructure for some time now, and the speed and responsiveness are fantastic. If, like me, you enjoy exploring the nuts and bolts of how things get published online, you'll be impressed.

We're making available some conveniences that may be new to you, such as one-click software installers for popular content management systems, wikis, and so forth. Of course there is a web interface for account and data administration, but these are early days, and for the time being you'll be best off knowing your way around the command line, and having an ability to configure and tweak applications yourself.

That said, as we get ready to open the doors in November, I'd like to ask for a bit of your time to aid our next steps.

First and foremost, there's the question of whether or not you wish to continue on to TextDrive. It may well be that through the bumpy ride of the past few months you've moved on elsewhere. That's perfectly understandable. No hard feelings, best of luck to you, here's hoping we can have a tea someday, but please let us know.

If you are interested in a TextDrive account, great! Happy to have you. The question for you is one of timing.

Those willing to start with a new, tabula rasa account on the TextDrive platform will jump to the front of the line to have login details sent to them. As you get set up, existing data will be available on Joyent servers until the end of November, and thereafter will be available from backups for six months. Migrating yourself need not be daunting: we have scripts, tricks and documentation showing how.

Those wishing to have their accounts moved certainly will, but this will take some time. Migrations begin this week, to be completed before the end of November.

Let us know which you'd prefer by logging into this stripped-down version of the new TextDrive customer portal.

That's it for now. Thanks in advance for letting us know, and talk to you soon.

All the best to you,

Check the old forum for the secret word
As for email, if you're not getting anything, it's likely @joyent has the wrong email info for you (that's what gets passed on). Send an email to joyent support and they'll fix you up. At least they did that for me.
