Tried to join KaiZen Garden to say goodbye... tried twice, in fact. But did not receive the join-up email.

So I'll say goodbye here. Nice to have shared the TextDrive thing with you.

Its been a long happy ride. I'm sorry for Dean who seems to have had bigger problems than he's willing to reveal (don't blame him for that). Hope they're only about money.

I regret he decided to turn off the Forum as suddenly as he did ("Maintenance" indeed!). But I'd moved the last of my stuff only last night (Australian time) and posted a short recollection of HAL's last song to the forum. It felt like that... (and it was like that).

My server at TXD --- "Collingwood" --- seems still to be firing. It was aptly named for me. Collingwood was the inner suburb of Melbourne where I first set up an Internet consulting business in 1996. It was barely profitable, but I never cut my customers loose as Dean has done (I transferred my clients to the Australian offshoot of E-Presence ex. Banyan in 1999... a year later they, too, disappeared into the black hole of the dot.com collapse).

Still, I've had good value for the $400 (?) I paid to join the first TextDrive VC round in 2005. So no regrets... aside, of course, from loosing the opportunity to lurk around the TXD forums occasionally.

Best wishes to all,

Peter Gallagher

Posting some relevant "Goodbye quotes" here on the occasion of the *Cease Operations Day" for TextDrive travelers—VCs, employees, and former owners.

“What is that feeling when you're driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? - it's the too-huge world vaulting us, and it's good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

“Farewell has a sweet sound of reluctance. Good-by is short and final, a word with teeth sharp to bite through the string that ties past to the future.”
― John Steinbeck, The Winter of Our Discontent

“But the wild things cried, “Oh please don’t go - we’ll eat you up - we love you so!”

And Max said, “No!”
The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved goodbye.”
― Maurice Sendak

“I was trying to feel some kind of good-bye. I mean I’ve left schools and places I didn’t even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don’t care if it’s a sad good-bye or a bad good-bye, but when I leave a place I like to know I’m leaving it. If you don’t you feel even worse.”
― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

TextDrive was certainly a webhost with a personality.  An unfolding story of unexpected twists, turns and cliffhangers.  A plot rich with characters quick to cheer, jeer, laugh, or lend a hand—often all at once.  Webhosting with a fabulous side of drama, but with self-aware humor.

Textdrive is like a book you didn't want to put down—and, remembered long after you did.

Farewell,

Foster.

P.S. Peter, watched HAL's song scene.  A good one.

Best to all.

ps seems that textdrive is still hobbling along. "Stories of it's demise may have been exaggerated" :-/

It feels like a bitter parting to me.

When you take a risk on a new venture and it works out, you expect to be rewarded, not argued with and abandoned.

I do not feel I've had good value. I've been forced to move servers four times, each time incurring fees from my IT support guru (I don't know my PHP from my PCP), and suffered multiple email and site outages. If I had received shares for my investment I would still have them - in a considerably more valuable company.

I wish all of my fellow co-investors fair winds and fairer treatment in the future.

Steve
