Should probably start spreading the word.

Maintenance

As anyone looking for decent support or useful information the past few months can attest, the revival of TextDrive has not been a success. What began in mid-2012 as an exciting challenge fuelled by good intentions and lean resources quickly turned into a cleanup project with almost no resources. It is disappointing to report that after a year and a half of uphill battles and unimagined setbacks, after several costly efforts to regroup and find another way, options to keep TextDrive growing have run out, and we will cease operations on the 14th of March, 2014. For those who wish to know, details of what went wrong will be made available once shutdown operations have completed. Sorry to have let you down. Dean

I just saw that this morning as well.

At least Dean finally spoke right?

No. But I wouldn't waste any time in getting your data off of textdrive.

Does anyone know any more information on a timeframe?  Are the servers going to be shut down in 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, etc?

Kind of a bummer that they took away the forums at the exact moment of making this announcement. Will make it hard to coordinate help for those who need it.

This implies there's some part of Textdrive that hasn't shut down already.  Is there?  My tiny corner of it (residing on jervis) seems to remain as gone as it was three weeks ago.

I have two sites still being served from TxD. And I just logged on to Beatrice https://virtualmin-jfk.textdrive.us/beatrice/
so i assume what is up is up until it fails or it shuts down on March 14th.

I have had everything migrated for weeks now. All I need to do is switch DNS settings.

Likewise, I've had plan B ready to go for a couple of weeks, hoping that this wouldn't happen while knowing it was probably imminent. I just have to tell people to ensure that they have local copies of any e-mail they need before I switch over DNS.

I would be surprised if anything was shut down before the 14th, but I'm not going to wait until the last minute, either.

Hi Guys,

Two forums exist on the Kaizen Garden forums to help co-ordinate things here.  http://discuss.kaizengarden.co/

Thanks for setting that up and getting it running, Jacques! I've since moved all my stuff to a digital ocean VPS, so I'm not going to need your setup. But I'm so glad to know it's out there for those that do!

Thanks for all you did for us over at TxD!

Does anyone think an email will be sent out to all TxD 2.0 people?  Or will everyone that's not paying attention right now to the forums just crash and burn?

I'm leaning towards Dean letting everyone crash and burn myself.

The latter is the most likely scenario  ... otherwise we all would have received the email by now.

Making the announcement in a way that manages to cut off discussion among TxD's more engaged users while also leaving many (most?) people in the dark about the shutdown is a nice coup de grace.

3.0? Yea, it could happen.

In the meantime, I will entertain offers on textdrive.me

Please note on the screenshot, in the footer, it clearly states TextDrive is a trademark of Joyent. Joyent still exists.

I was still rather a Joyent fanboi, even after they killed the Connector (whose loss I still lament to this day), even after they fobbed us off and Dean took us up. But after they turned off the lights on the not-yet-migrated servers, I lost all respect for them. Joyent is the last company I'd recommend for cloud services. They can't be trusted.

I grew to love Connector (esp after @lgpiper's great docs)

It was a sad day when we lost that app. i had gotten to depend on it.

I have no idea what/who Joyent is today.... but, yes, no respect for  them ... losers in my eyes.

I miss it too, so I forked it: https://github.com/awesome/joyent-connector Maybe I could help resurrect it someday. I started programming Ruby with thurlow.texdrive.com back in the days…

Not to change the topic of this thread, but has anyone heard anything about Strongspace?  I have not heard any updates in a long time, and just assumed we could continue to use that service, independent of TxD.

Scott - as far as I know Strongspace is independent from TxD. It was spun out a few years ago and it stated that the Lifetime accounts were being honoured.

I have not heard anything contrary to this:

Hey all -

Nope. Response from Joyent:

Thanks for your message. Refunds, special offers or coupons -- specific to either Joyent's or TextDrive's former shared hosting customers -- are not available.

We understand that TextDrive announced they would be ceasing operations as of March 14, 2014, as shown on: http://discuss.textdrive.com. Relevant information follows:
> We have no current information on any methods for contacting TextDrive.
> Joyent has no access to TextDrive's environments, servers or data. Control of all environments, servers and data (for our former shared hosting accounts) was transferred to TextDrive when it became a separate company in 2013.

Joyent no longer offers the types of shared hosting services that were transferred to TextDrive, but you are always welcome to open a new account at http://www.joyent.com.

I am closing this ticket, as we normally do when we have no further on-topic information to share. We wish you the very best.

It really seems like Joyent spun off TextDrive and gave it no resources to survive. I felt this was coming shortly after the spin off and support was harder and harder to get a hold off... we have been duped. Plain and simple. Joyent is run by dishonorable people lacking integrity. It anyone knows an attorney who would take up such a matter maybe we can pool some money together to have a firm at least hear what happened and see if there is anything that can be done about it. You can't just spin off your contracts to a new company and then let it sink. The agreement was "as long as we exist". They still exist. I don't care if they did some accounting moves to transfer assets to an empty, unfunded, unstaffed company.

That water is actually not water but my money and it's not my money under a bridge it's in the pockets of Jason Hoffman. I haven't even hit $17 a month for service. DreamHost offers high quality hosting for less than half that.

Nor to dissuade others from pursuing any means they wish to try and recover their money.

You'd be better off filing an individual small claims action. Which I ponder doing now and again. The issue I'd have would be venue; they might prevail in claiming that VA courts don't have jurisdiction over them.

So, I mailed Joyent on the back of an old support ticket.    They replied:
Thanks for your message. Refunds, special offers or coupons -- specific to Joyent's or TextDrive's former shared hosting customers -- are not available.

I'm pretty cross at this.  I didn't just invest $200, I invested $1000 at a time when I couldn't really afford it but wanted the security of never paying for hosting again.  Hosting for me ended at Christmas 2012 when the Joyent machine failed, and I was never migrated to Textdrive.  I had to find old backups, buy services from WordPress and new hosting.  It means I had hosting between 2006 and 2012...six years or $166 per year.  I know in the UK I get great support from Vidahost for about $47 a year.

What to do?  I haven't the funds to launch legal action in the US when I live in the UK.  I can only mail and appeal to Jason and Dean to ask about the fairness of this.  If someone in the US starts a small claim I'd be happy to join and part fund it.

Ben
