*A Tribute to IDL Chemicals – A Legacy That Lives On*

Founded in 6 th April 1961, *Indian Detonators Ltd ( in 1000 acrs land )began its journey in Kukatpally, Hyderabad, with another key unit at Rourkela, Odisha. Established by the visionary *Late Shri C. C. Desai*, an IAS officer,  cabinet member, the company grew to become one of India’s most respected manufacturers of explosives. Over the decades, it evolved in name—from Indian detonators to IDL Chemicals,  IDL Industries, and later to Gulf Oil Corporation under the Hindujas—but the spirit remained unchanged.

At its heart was a culture built by people, especially under the leadership of *Late Shri Varada Rajan*, Managing Director, who served the company for 22 years. A simple man with extraordinary vision, he led with discipline, empathy, and an unwavering focus on safety—paramount in the explosives industry. He believed in *“good work leads to increase in wages”* and ensured that prosperity was shared. Workers and their families were cared for through subsidized canteen meals at just 35 paise per month, healthcare support, and monetary assistance for children’s education. The canteen itself was counted among the best in Asia, where even the MD would stand in queue for tea and food alongside staff.

*What Made IDL Different*
- *People First*: Time punctuality, fair discipline that never “hit them on the stomach,” and warm industrial relations with unions. Officers and workers traveled together in the company’s fleet of 22 buses—often with the MD himself on board.
- *Knowledge & Growth*: A strong R&D center with dedicated scientists, regular training, and weekly business reviews. The learning was so rich that many staff went on to settle abroad or rise to senior positions elsewhere, always carrying IDL’s ethos with them.
- *Care Beyond Work*: A company dairy farm with Jersey and ongole bulls,  22 buses for transport, Dussehra bonus with a special lunch, movie outings, and recreational activities that made work enjoyable. A culture where “we used to enjoy the work” wasn’t a slogan—it was lived.

Though the industry demanded rigor, Shri Varada Rajan balanced it with humanity. He kept a close eye on competitors, ensured safety above all, and instilled discipline in workers, staff, and officers alike. Yet he remained approachable, sipping the same tea served to all, monitoring business with weekly reviews, and maintaining harmony that lasted even through changes in management styles over the years.

*The Bond That Endures*
Even three years after major changes, and though the company has sadly wound up now, the IDL/GOCL family remains united. For 17 years, officers have gathered every January for a Get-together—the most recent saw 135 officers attend. A 200-member WhatsApp group, a detailed telephone directory with DOB, service years, and addresses, and constant contact keep the fraternity alive. Many seniors are now 80+, yet the coordination, understanding, and cooperation continue.

Wherever they are, former employees speak with pride of the knowledge gained at IDL, the working style of those days, and the management that shaped careers and character. Officers from both IDL and GOCL eras meet as one family—no difference, only respect.

*Legacy*
Indian Detonators wasn’t just a manufacturer of explosives. It was an institution that built people. It taught discipline, shared prosperity, prioritized safety, and never forgot the human behind the employee. It gave us livelihoods, learning, lifelong friendships, and memories we still cherish when we meet.

We are all proud to have worked with this company.

May God’s blessings keep all IDL families well, and give our seniors continued health and strength. The gates may have closed, but the values, the camaraderie, and the pride will never wind up.

Kind attention GN PRASAD
I went thro the tribute what you penned is indeed good. In a nut shell it gave the legacy of IDL   Blue birdbuses going thru all the corners of hyd and sec bad and fetching employees on time. CC Desai was a former ICS officer and not IAS.
That is all I can say.   I appreciate your true engagement and involvement in the IDL legacy and spirit of openness
Regards
Rsrinivasan.
