Dear friends,

Our first French Film (with English subtitles) of the month of July, on 10th at 7pm

v  THREE HEARTS  (3 Coeurs - 2014) by Benoit JACQUOT

More than 40 years ago, at the outset of his filmmaking career, Benoit Jacquot worked as an assistant director to the great French novelist and helmer Marguerite Duras, and now, with “Three Hearts,” he has made a film that feels more indebted to her romantic values than anything else in his oeuvre. A tax inspector, his new bride and her sister become entwined in a love triangle after unknowingly meeting her sister at a train station, when they both miss the last train back to Paris.

Ciné-Club : 3 Coeurs (2014)

(3 Hearts)

by Benoit JACQUOT

Synopsis:

A tax inspector, his new bride and her sister become entwined in a love triangle after unknowingly meeting her sister at a train station when they both miss the last train back to Paris.

Marc misses his train to return to Paris, in a small provincial station. He asks a young woman in a coffee shop for advise to find a hotel. Sharing secrets and jokes, both spend the night wandering the streets. They set up an appointment at the Tuileries Garden in Paris, the following Friday, at 6pm. When the day comes, Marc does not come to the meeting.

Sometime later, back in the provincial town, he meets Sophie, and falls in love. But Sophie is Sylvie’s sister, who went to the United States with her boyfriend. Marc doesn’t know that, marries Sophie and comes to settle in the provincial city. Through an internet connection, Sylvie discovers that the future husband of her sister is Marc..

This melodrama clearly resembles a sentimental thriller, we are impatiently waiting for the outcome of this cruel and passionate love story.

About the film:

Here, beneath the surface of a cool, contempo love triangle involving a Parisian man (Benoit Poelvoorde) and a pair of provincial French sisters (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Chiara Mastroianni), are all the values Duras held dear: love at first sight, spontaneous tears, all-consuming desire and impossible, self-destructive decisions.
