Yerknow, one thing I miss about Collective is hearing about new music,
and what everyone's listening to. The wide remit of the rest of this
site meant there was a huge range of tastes, and I found some music I
never would have listened to otherwise. So...

what is everyone listening to? (new records, gigs, whatevers)

Last gig (and album) for me was Megson, a Folk duo specialising in
songs from the north east. They're really friendly too, we couldn't
find the right entrance to the venue, so they let us cut through their
practice rooms, and we also met their dog.

And next up - I'm seeing Tilly and the Wall next month on the Moshi
Moshi tour, anyone else catching that? I've not listened to them a
huge amount, but from what I have heard, I think they'll be really
good live.

On Friday night I went to see Deerhunter, and I thought they were fantastic. Their new album is much more accessible than the last. Some people I was with found them boring, but they didn't really know the music or the 'mythology' of the band, which I think adds a lot to the experience.

Apparently after Deerhunter had finished (and I had left to get the last tube), a duo of a vocalist and drummer began doing Frank Sinatra covers, but it quickly went peculiar, culminating in the drummer sticking the top of the hi-hat up his bum. Right up there. It didn't sound very pleasant.

I was thinking the same thing Spinky - I'm kinda lost without the
Collective weekly playlists! It introduced me to lots of new stuff.

Not heard of Megson. Will have to have a listen somewhere. I like
folk, but I hadn't even heard of those Mercury nominees Rachel Unthank
and the Winterset before... Doh.

I saw Doves and Manics on Friday night. The latter were only doing the
6 songs from their original signing with Heavenly, while the former
were doing some of their new material, which was a bit samey. When
they played their best tunes, it's was top though - Black and White
Town, By the River. Are Doves "dad rock" would you say?

I've never really 'got' Deerhunter. I gave their last album a try so
maybe it's time to explore again! Didn't the lead singer have a few
spin off bands too?

This weekend I went to see Jeffrey Lewis. It was a very refreshing
show and I loved the little comic strips that accompany the music. I
went out of the venue feeling very happy!

Aside from that I'm unhealthily addicted to the new Of Montreal and
Late of the Pier albums. I've gone all electro!

No live music for me unless it's a bi-annual trip to the Sage. For the last couple of weeks I've been enjoying a Pitchfork recommendation, Los Angeles by Flying Lotus. Crackly instrumental hip-hop.

Better than that is more hip-hip, this time with singing and strings; Blue Sky Black Death's album Late Night Cinema. Some gorgeous stuff in there.

Lastly yet more hip-hop, instrumental again, with a big jazzy twist. The Life of Clutchy Hopkins by - surprise, surprise - Clutchy Hopkins. Surprisingly happy music.

I'm going to my first gig as a Bristol resident tomorrow, Jeffrrey
Lewis gets the honour of my company for the evening.

I'm shamefully listening to Noah and The Whale at the moment, but also
one of Buck 65's old albums along with Toots & The Maytals.

Good choice! He was superb when I saw him last weekend. I even bought
a t-shirt..

We was great - and I think Bristol's Thekla is my new favourite
venue. The Wave Pictures were great too - and what I heard of My Two
Toms was ace, but annoyingly waiting at the bar seemed to eat away at
their set for me. Is Jeff's bassist Jack by the way?

Looking forward to Micha P Hinson soon.

I think so yeah. He introduced the drummer as his brother in Sheffield
but I think I must have misheard!

Along with Ghani I've booked to go and see the terrifying Imogen
Cooper at the Sage. I saw her play in Hall 1 a while ago with an
orchestra but this is in the so tiny Hall 2 where it will be just her
and her magic piano.

Obviously she is brilliant but the fear she caused in us both
surprised me. Such presence! But in the bizarre way she carries and
expresses herself, such intellect! Now I know that you can't seem
clever by the way you walk, sit and play, but she does. Horribly so.
She made me feel very small, stupid and useless. She didn't inspire,
she intimidated.

And that was just with some light stuff by Mozart and Ravel. This time
she'll be playing Schubert. A heavy hitter if ever there was one.

No way could I handle being on the ground floor within touching
distance of this woman. We're up on level 3, hopefully out of harm's
way. No doubt she'll say a few words in-between concertos about
baroque tonality, pleasing aromas of clefs and other such impenetrable
things. Then she'll look about her and laugh, and we'll laugh too.
Ahahaha! Like that.

It will be fab. Good luck to anyone there who leaves their mobile on.

As promised I saw Micah P Hinson at the weekend and wasn't
disappointed. Boy can that man sing from the side of his face. And he
has gone all rock, but I liked it! Lots of the tracks you know
sounding like ones you don't. Downsides were that he has his wife on
the keyboards who doesn't really do much, so looks bored on the side
of the stage most of the gig, but I didn't really care as he was so
good.

Next up our bianual visit to see James Yorkston by the looks of it -
but his new album is beautiful and apparently the Louisiana in Bristol
is a tiny pub of a venue, so should be a great place to see him.

Anyone bought any good records recently? I've been buying nothing but
old re-issues for the last few months, not found anything new I like

Except for this week's tip... the new* Holly Golightly and the
Brokeoffs album is well worth getting. Put on your cowboy boots, take
a swig of bourbon and listen.

*new = this year - that's pretty new for me...

By chance I downloaded Bless You by Lulu Rouge. Kind of ambient, dubby electro-pop. I like it a lot. Also the Pitchfork recommendation Uproot by DJ/rupture. Excellent stuff, loads going on in there.

Class A dubstepper Distance has a new album out. Repercussions. Very good.

A couple of my friends are making music, they've got a record deal and everything, the clever monkeys. But they aren't called that, they are Russell's Teapot. They've made it onto the playlist on 6Music, well done them.
