UNESCO created International Literacy Day in 1967 to bring attention to this issue, and it has been celebrated annually on 8th September ever since.

The theme of the International Literacy Day (ILD) 2023 is "Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies"

According to UNESCO "literacy empowers individuals and improves their lives by expanding their capabilities to choose a kind of life they can value. It is also a driver for sustainable development. Literacy is an integral part of education and lifelong learning premised on humanism as defined by Sustainable Development Goal 4".

In this connection, Dr. S. R. Lasker Library is going to celebrate this day by promoting diversified topics related to this day by using the social media platforms of the Library.

Please note that UNESCO will arrange a global event which will take place on 8 September 2023 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France (Room II). The global celebration will include the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes award ceremony to announce this year's outstanding prizewinning programmes.
