A First Impression of East West Link
Intern's Comments
When I first heard about EWL, I was excited to find an organization which offered youth the opportunity to write articles for a community newspaper. Being passionate about writing, I immediately inquired about the program, and found out it offered much more than I expected. EWL is a leadership training program. It not only develops students’ communication skills in writing and speech, but also gives them exposure to the community’s leaders, intellectuals and experts in various fields. In my first few weeks of being here, I have come to know professionals in the community who are willing to provide guidance, support and direction to the youth for their all-round development. EWL is a unique program for students that builds a bridge from their theoretical studies at school to concrete application in the career-driven world, and helps them realize their strengths and abilities. I support the goals of East West Link and hope that the community discovers the invaluable potential in this program.
Hiba Haque, Intern

Furthermore, you will learn about our ‘Meet & Greet’ program and what our guest speakers have to say about us. I hope you enjoy the newsletter because we have a lot in store for our readers. Thank you,
Neda Farooqi, Managing Editor
Comments from Editor in Chief, EWL
Islamophobia is on the rise in society, and yet a large portion of our community remains heedless to this fact. We have no right to sit back and complain about how the media is against Muslims if Muslim youth keep getting shepherded into career fields that have no substantial effect on socio-political discourse. We need more people in the fields of social sciences and law, media and political activism. This is why East West Link is a strategic step for bettering the condition of Muslims by putting out the Muslim voice in the media to challenge Islamophobia.
East West Link is a great program for the development of youth. Since joining East West Link, I have been more involved in and aware of societal events. My writing, editing, and website management skills have been refined. It also gave me an avenue to inform readers of my position on social, political and even moral issues of importance. East West Link is a great first step for learning and developing skills for future professions. I recommend anybody who wishes to make a change in society to join East West Link.
Faiz Ahmed , Editor in Chief

A Word of Thanks from Program Director, EWL
EWL was an idea which came as an inspiration from my forefathers – my father Mahmood Farooqi, who was a well-known journalist, writer and founder of the first ISNA radio program ‘Tajjalli’ in Chicago, my grandfather Noor Muhammad Farooqi, Editor of ‘Deenyat’ magazine, and my uncle Khalid Farooqi, who was the Editorial Board Member of major newspapers and author of many books. The EWL program is a dedication towards continuing their legacy by raising awareness in the public through media. It is my desire to train bright young minds in the same spirit, in order to become future leaders in society.
Since 2009, EWL’s program has grown rapidly, and this success could not have come without the tremendous support of our community members, organizations, interns and staff. A special thanks to Dr. Muzammil Ahmed of ISPU and Dr. Mujahid Al-Fayadh of LIFE, for their great support since the very beginning of the program. We are grateful to Imam Dawud Walid of CAIR-MI and to its board members, for providing valuable opportunities to our interns for joint projects. Much respect to Imam Sheikh Ali Suleiman Ali of MCWS for his continuous blessings. In addition, MCWS has been an incredible instrument for the 2011 year. The shura and council members have volunteered classrooms for our internship program and for that I am grateful. My warmest appreciation goes to the community leaders and professionals who have mentored our young interns at the EWL Speaker Forum. I would especially like to thank the past presidents of PAA, Shahid Tahir, Seema Ahmed of MMDC, Mr. Ghalib Begg of CIOM, Dr. Abu Samra of Wayne State University, and to Dr. Abdul Hafeez and Masood Rab, board members of Crescent Academy International.
Last but not least, I would like to thank our interns, and interns' parents as well for their continued support towards the program. I warmly welcome our Editor-in-Chief Faiz Ahmed, Staff Members Zeba Ahmed, Hiba Haque and all our Advisors to the program, and hope to see our community come together to support the development of our young interns and the vision that EWL holds on to.
