I want to voice my displeasure about the Governor's endorsement of Pete Hoekstra for US Senate.
Last year, Michiganders had a choice in the Republican primary to set a new direction for our state. Among that choice was elected officials including Pete Hoekstra. Michiganders spoke and voted into office Rick Snyder -- based on a fresh, focused on facts not ideology and unifying message.
As you both know, I was active with Rick Snyder from last April after returning to Michigan from overseas. I introduced candidate Snyder to predominantly democratic party affiliated communities and help garner that support. This would not have been possible with any other candidate, particularly Pete Hoekstra. Not only has Mr. Hoekstra's statements been divisive towards all Americans, especially homosexuals and Muslim Americans, but his lack of engagement on a state wide basis questions his ability to effectively represent all Michiganders in the US Senate.
Many of my friends and Governor supporters wish the Governor should have waited for a candidate more similar in nature and approach to the Governor's own message before endorsing Pete Hoekstra. We see a mismatch of the Governor supporting a person who not only challenged him in the primary with a different vision and message, but one who has a divisive track record.
I hope we did not misjudge the Governor's commitment to unify our state at all levels.
