Help Finding 5th Great-Grandparents

Hi! 

 I saw that someone posted my (paternal) grandfather’s— Dr. David Russell Ewing— obituary on here and wanted to see if anyone could help me with my family tree! I’ve looked EVERYWHERE. I mean literally e v e r y w h e r e, and cannot get passed my Paternal 4th Great-Grandfather. I’m really into ancestry and genealogy, I’ve sold all sorts of family mysteries and we have a certified genealogist in the family, and STILL, no one can get past my 4th Great-Grandfather. It’s a Ewing of course, and that’s why I figure you guys may be able to help us! I don’t know if I’m supposed to join something on your website, or if you guys can just help me! I’ve contacted the cemetery that he was buried in, and they do not have any information really either. I have a public family tree on Ancestry.com (“Final Draft / Ewing Family Tree”).

Married: Louisa Jane (Hudson) Ewing in 1848 at Lake County, California, USA

B: Nov 1829 Missouri, USA. 

D: 1905 Lake County, California, USA

They had 11 Children:

I’ve also taken DNA tests with Ancestry and 23andMe. So had my Grandfather, Dr. David Russell Ewing.

Hi Andrea,

I'm not familiar with this line, but there are a few clues on FamilySearch (FS).  Here's the record for John Nathan Ewing:

It looks like FS is missing a few of the children you have listed.  But you might be interested to see it does have his father as Nathan Ewing. The source is attached to the record (I also attached to this email), which is the death record of John Nathan Ewing (age 90) that lists his father.  Here's the citation: 

"California Deaths and Burials, 1776-2000", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:HKS1-3BW2 : 8 April 2022), Nathan in entry for John Nathan Ewing, 1912.

I suspect with a birth of 1822 and death of 1912 it should be relatively easy to find John Nathan Ewing in several census records.  You might even find his father Nathan in a census record such as 1840 or 1850.  The 1880 and 1890 (and beyond) should also indicate where the parents were born in case Nathan was also born in Virginia or immigrated from somewhere.

I do know some of the Ewings of Virginia were connected to the Ewings of South Carolina.  I'm not sure if this Nathan ties in with that branch of Ewings or not.  If so, I have a bit more information about them as well (since my Ewings were also in South Carolina in the 1790s and early 1800s).

Oh, in fact here he is in the 1910 census:

It again says he was born in Virginia and both his father and mother were born in Ireland.  He is named "Jonathin N. Ewing" in the census.

Ah, the plot thickens... See 1900 census says his parents are from West Va.  See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6LKZ-998?i=18&cc=1325221&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMMGJ-4J6   I would say this is incorrect because even his birth year is incorrect.

Did you also have his  voter registration inform at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9T7J-5BV?i=174&cc=1935764
