Recall that the STR Panel tests are like a compass, they accurately point towards your male ancestral roots (i.e. heading of about 90 degrees—probably Ewing Clade 5) but they can not and do not nail down the exact lineage.
The Big Y is like a GPS it not only very accurately points to the exact heading (i.e. 87.3 degrees—for certain Ewing Clade 5) but also and most importantly defines your exact location (the specific Ewing line/clade/haplogroup) by identifying your male lineage marker , called a SNP -- single nucleotide polymorphism.
The Y chromosome, which is passed from father to son, generation after generation, has 59 million nucleotides and the only change that happens is a rare mutation every couple of generations or so that creates a unique family marker for all male dependents of the person who created the mutation, thereby creating proof positive of the male lineage. This means that you will have about 50-60 unique SNPs defining your lineage back to the biological Adam, early modern human.
We have 12 unique Ewing and variant spellings family clades/haplogroups which are defined by a series of unique SNP markers. These clades are not closely related to each other -- the most recent common ancestor lived 30-40 thousand years ago. However, within each of the clades the Ewings are closely related with the most recent common Ewing ancestor living 3-15 generations ago.
