Dear HMT!
I am setting off today to start a year long contract to work as a Research Engineer in Singapore. Due to this, I am regretfully stepping down as Health and Mobility Technology Community of Practice Coordinator. I am delighted however to introduce you all to my replacement, Basit Abdul, a clinical engineer currently working in Kent. He has been a great support to me over the last couple of months and I am very confident he can build on the great start we have made to building the community.
Over the last couple of months, through the Design for Global Health Workshops, we have developed a community of people interested in this area of development and now have a number of projects being worked on by various groups including:
1. Swansea and Cardiff EWB Branches have linked up with a Swansea NHS Trust / Sierra Leone HealthLink to develop hospital laboratory equipment.
2. Sheffield EWB Branch have linked up with Kamuli Mission Hospital in Uganda to work on various projects including community outreach, medical equipment and infrastructure.
3. Cambridge EWH Branch have taken up the JustMilk project and the development of a low cost traction device.
In addition to this we have a project which still requires group support:
4. Olivia Comberti (based in Glasgow) is working on the development of a transportation system for women in labour in rural Afghanistan with TransAid.
If you are interested in working on any of these projects please do get in touch with Basit who will pass your details to the appropriate person.
The HMT community of practice is very keen to provide support to these projects in any way we can. Basit will therefore be in touch to ask you what form you would like this to take. We are happy to continue running the workshops however, if this is not useful we will focus our efforts in another direction.
One thing we are keen to promote is communication between members of the community. We can do this both using the HMT googlegroup (sign up at
http://ewb-uk.org/knowledge/healthcare) or face-to-face at seminars and workshops. There is alot of expertise in the group which we can all benefit from.
We would also like to provide groups the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience and we have been asked by the IMECHE to put forward groups working to develop health technologies to speak at the
Appropriate Healthcare Technology for Developing Countries Seminar on September 7th (http://events.imeche.org/EventView.aspx?EventID=1036). I will be in touch with each of the groups individually about this, however if you are not a member of one of the groups and are working on a project which you would like to present please do get in touch.
Finally, I would like to thank you for your enthusiasm over the last couple of months in getting this community off the ground and I wish you all the best with your work in this field. Please do keep in touch and I am happy to help in any way I can!
Vicky
