Hi Katie,

Just been thinking about the solar pond ewb project.

To get the ball rolling, may I suggest the brief could proceed roughly as follows:

  1. .       Requirement for alternative method of electrical power generation in developing countries
  2. .       Description of solar pond
  3. .       Case studies
  4. .       Selection of lining for reservoir (plastic, clay etc)
  5. .       Heat engine consideration (working fluid, turbine, pump, evaporator, condenser). Consider organic rankine/ Kalina cycle.
  6. .       Maintenance considerations
  7. .       Location (access to salt water supply (coastal), off-grid, significant solar resources, etc)
  8. .       Materials and construction details for proposed system for implementation
Iv attached a few relevant papers. hope this helps.

Hi Katie,

Thanks for getting back to me on this, i thought you had forgotten.

The solar pond is an idea which I am particularly interested in although I am tied up with the Desert Fridge and my 3rd year research projects so I cant fully concentrate on this at the moment. I would be more than happy to work with any student in a feasibility study for implementing this technology in developing countries.

If we could show this to work I am pretty sure this is something Humanity First would be interested in.

Hi Qasid,

Just wanted to say thank you for sending these my way in case you thought I hadn’t got back to you on them – I will look into them and then see if we can develop them as research briefs.

All the best,

Katie

Hi Katie,

hope all is well.

Just writing to share some newish ideas which I reckon could be developed into good EWB research projects:

  1. Solar ponds: A method of solar power generation (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_pond ) which is "particularly attractive for rural areas in developing countries"...
  2. West African super-grid: A brilliant plan to solve the regions energy needs (see attached: page 34: Akosombo Declaration). The various elements of the feasibility study for this scheme could be taken up as EWB research projects.

Also, could I suggest that we establish a link with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) as there are many projects which they are working on which we could collaborate on with regards to research.

Anyway thats my 2 pennies worth!
