Subject: 2012 International Ashden Awards - call for entries
Dear Andrew,
As an expert in the field of sustainable energy in the developing world, we would greatly value your suggestions of organisations who should be applying for a 2012 Ashden Award.
If you know of innovative, inspirational local sustainable energy enterprises or schemes that are reducing carbon emissions and bringing significant social and economic benefits to local communities in the developing world, then we’d like to hear about them.
The 2012 International Awards offer:
· Up to six winners prize money of £20,000 each, with one winner receiving a gold award of £40,000. Awards will be presented at a VIP ceremony in London in May 2012.
· A substantial package of benefits including: business or organisational support to enable scale-up of the work; introductions to potential funders, investors and others working in the field; a short, broadcast quality film about the winning work; substantial media coverage.
We are looking for businesses, not-for-profits, NGOs and social enterprises working in Africa, Asia (including China), Central and South America and the Caribbean, who are bringing renewable power or clean cooking to low income customers.
This year we are particularly interested in organisations delivering end-user or carbon finance; manufacturers of new products providing renewable electricity or clean cooking for low-income customers; off-grid and grid-connected renewable electricity schemes bringing significant local benefits; the production of renewable fuel for heat or electricity generation (e.g pellets made from biomass, briquettes made from crop waste); and renewable energy schemes or enterprises that demonstrably reduce deforestation through their work (e.g better charcoal production, more efficient cookstoves, energy efficiency measures for homes).
“The press exposure we have received from the awards has been incredible. Our website traffic has jumped up substantially and we have had visitors from across the world. We have had a massive surge in distributer inquiries, and almost all of them heard about us through our interviews with the BBC.”
Ned Tozun, D.light Design, 2010 Gold Award winner
To make a recommendation please email me (or after 21st July, Carla Jones at Carla...@ashdenawards.org) the name of the organisation, website address, contact details of the person most responsible for the local sustainable energy work and a one line description of their work, by 8 August. We will look at all recommendations and invite those eligible to apply. Deadline for international applications this year is Tuesday 18 October 2011.
To find out more, including full details of criteria and the application process please visit http://www.ashdenawards.org/int_awards
We really value your recommendations for applicants, but please note that all applicants go through the same process of short listing and independent judging – so we obviously cannot guarantee that any organisation will progress through to full application stage.
With best wishes,
Rachel
