Northeastern University Student Chapter
Good Afternoon,
I would like to invite you to participate in an important endeavor of Northeastern University, the development of our Climate Justice Action Plan (CJAP). The CJAP is a community-driven planning initiative, the purpose of which is to recommend a roadmap that will enable the University to reach net zero emissions by 2040. Focus areas of the CJAP will include: academia, research, and campus policy; buildings, energy, and water; climate adaption and resilience; climate justice and equity; community engagement and education; food and waste; and land use and transportation.
Perhaps unique to Northeastern, the CJAP will have a focus on social, environmental, and economic justice, which means we will be recognizing our comparative role in our contributions to the climate crisis, the disproportionate impact of climate disruptions to and capacity to adapt by marginalized populations, and the transformative change necessary to address historic inequities and achieve equitable outcomes.
On October 27th, 2021, we will be holding our first broad engagement event – a Community Conversation on Climate Justice Action. We view this event, and virtual meeting room to follow, as spaces for collaboration where we will engage with Northeastern’s communities to understand their various perspectives on where and how the University can play a role in addressing the climate crisis, while putting justice and equity at the forefront of the planning process and decision-making.
Information Tabling on October 27
For this event, we have reserved the indoor quad at the Curry Student Center. Given your group’s unique relevance to the CJAP, we would like to invite you to table (actively or passively) in this area to promote your mission and activities. This event will begin at 11am and go through until 7pm. We expect the most foot traffic from 11:30am to 1:30pm and suggest actively staffing you table during this time. . If you are interested, please contact Jeff Costello directly.
Further, we invite you to participate in any of the three sessions that are being held throughout the day to get better acquainted with the CJAP – these sessions will be held at 12, 3 and 6pm. After the Community Conversation, we would like to invite you back to a round-table session to present the outcomes of the event, and to discuss how your group can synergize with the CJAP and other groups with similar or tangential focuses. Details on this follow-up discussion are still in the planning stages, so stay tuned.
Please consider joining us on October 27th, and do let me know if you are interested in engaging with us at the planned roundtable.
Volunteers
In support of this event, we need volunteers, to cover about 50 - 70 shifts, to help with engaging participants in providing their feedback on the CJAP planning process and related to its various areas of focus. Roles will include engagement of participants, sign-in table, greeting, and more. Please consider taking a role in this unique event. If you are interested, please contact Jeff Costello directly and respond with times you are available to volunteer.
