In the morning, Ferdie goes to get petrol and comes back to find Rosie posing in the field for Don Pedro. and Angie and Savio busy talking. The artist has now dropped his charming attitude of suave sophistication and is mistreating Rosie. When she sees the painting, she is devastated to find that it is a nude unflattering portrait of her. Don Pedro walks off with the painting and finds the can of petrol that Ferdie has left, along with a letter explaining that he is going on alone and thanking them for coming this far with him. The rest of them start to leave but Rosie refuses to go, saying that they can't leave Ferdie. She gets extremely upset and begins to yell at Savio, telling him that he should have died instead of Gabo and that Gabo only married Angie because Savio was in love with her. Savio angrily tells Rosie that she is selfish and reveals that her cat is actually dead, but she hadn't even noticed, leaving everyone else to look after it. They bury the cat and set off home. On the way, Rosie accidentally opens the glove compartment in the car and finds Savio's father's revolver. She puts it to her head, intending to shoot herself. When no one notices, she coughs and Savio sees his dad's revolver, which is an antique and worth a lot of money. He begins to wrestle with Rosie for the gun whilst driving, causing it to go off and Don Pedro gets shot in the head, without anyone noticing. They turn the car around and go to look for Ferdie; finding him by the roadside waiting for the bus, but can't pick him up as the car brakes fail. The back door of the car opens and when the car veers close to the cliff edge, Don Pedro's body falls out. The car eventually comes to a stop and Angie notices that Don Pedro has gone. Rosie says that he jumped out of the car to save himself, but Ferdie sees someone who he thinks is Don Pedro on a passing bus, while in fact, his body is in the bottom of the sea.
Got to second Baradwaj Rangan here. There was really nothing in the movie that made me sit up, laugh out loud like how various reviews across the net described. I rather found the movie trying too hard to evoke a laugh out of me. And setting out for a road trip just to find fanny seemed a very weak reason IMHO. Each of the five had their reasons sure, but with them being the couch potatoes they are sulking in their own comfort zones, you expect lot more of as to what drives them out of it.
I was thinking of the dead cat zen koan regarding Finding Fanny (because of the dead cat in the story). Because no one can put a price on a dead cat or on finding fanny, it becomes the most valuable thing in the world.
Finding Fanny is about a road trip that Angie (Deepika Padukone), Ferdie (Naseeruddin Shah), Rosie (Dimple Kapadia), Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapur) and Savio (Arjun Kapoor) take with the hope of finding Fanny, the girl that Ferdie had wanted to marry 46 years ago.
You wouldn't expect these five characters to ever get together under the roof of one car, but the quest to find Fanny somehow makes that possible. The quest itself tells a tale and uncovers ideas of love that maybe even the characters didn't know. So, is the movie really about finding Fanny? Or is it more than that?
In the end, I feel like, not only the mission to find Fanny, but the characters and even the audience are a metaphor. We're all a pool of thoughts, unsaid prayers, and sinful desires, that simply co-exist. We spend our entire lives looking for these ideas. Love comes down to one holistic sentiment, of finding oneself and one's idea of love, because if we don't know who we are, and what love is, are we even capable of feeling this strong emotion? As Angie says herself "no one deserves an incomplete love story", so what remains is finding ourselves before we go looking for our Fanny.
Footnote: Finding fanny is bullshit!! Just like the kids who flipped their middle finger at Savio, I too want to do the same to Homi Adajania, It does not even stay true to what it proclaims, never makes an attempt to state the obvious meaning. Nevertheless, the cinematography and background score is top notch!
Arjun Kapoor is Dimple Kapadia's son who prefers a colouring the picture of her husband so he looks like he is in the "pink of health" at the time of his mourning! Dimple is charming as the old lady who can "portect herself" and is cabaple of finding love, (or so it seems) in Pankaj Kapoor.
