Hi everyone,
One of the desires of white folks coming out of the study Waking Up White has been, "What are helpful things to say when white people say x, y,z, to me?" It may be around a Thanksgiving dinner table with extended family, in the gym, with a friend, or wherever.
So, this Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m., we are going to take some of these scenarios and brainstorm ways to respond.
We will not put two people on the "hot seat" to stand in front of others and come up with something on the spot. We will, in small groups, take scenarios and re-imagine how to respond.
If you have a real-life scenario you would like to talk about, please send it to me ahead of time, mary.h...@oberlin.edu, as I will have some suggested scenarios for each table, or bring it if you desire. Otherwise, I have some real-life examples, as well as some Role Plays I got online.
We hope to see you there. We are still seeking to use our Guidelines for Vulnerable Conversations, to find ways to talk about hard things in respectful and open ways, with one another.
In peace,
Mary
