The moderator of the event below is a friend of mine who attended the Evolution of Learning Symposium back in May--thought I'd pass it along. The UArts StudioNEXT sounds like a unique interdisciplinary/design initiative, and they are holding a panel discussion next Thursday, 10/15.
Please join us for the final event of the Studio Next Panel Discussion Series
Universities, Design Education and Non-Profits
Thursday, October 15
5 - 7pm
Terra Building, 5th Floor
211 S. Broad St.
The University of the Arts
The non-profit sector and local communities present unique opportunities for design education. As is the case with relationships with the business community, so must the specific parameters of partnerships between educational institutions and surrounding communities be further defined. In particular: Is the participatory design approach the most effective kind of working relationship? What is the design institution's responsibility to these stakeholders? What are the ethical issues? How do we assess the who and how of design's impact? What are the factors influencing local vs. non-local partnerships? Each panelist will give a brief presentation about their various projects and experiences within this territory before the discussion.
