Hi everyone,

Just wanted to thank those who came out to the Whole New Mind non-
bookclub club last Friday. Mary Conger, a student at Penn’s Graduate
School of Education, set up a fun and thoughtful agenda for us and did
a great job facilitating.

Ok, so it was a little awkward to walk around Wharton, clapping and
laughing with a bunch of strangers within spitting distance of the
great gurus of finance. But it was also liberating.

About 9 or 10 of us ate lunch and discussed whether or not we buy into
Daniel Pink’s argument that right-brain-related aptitudes are now
crucial for success. For the most part we did, although a few people
questioned the abundance part of Asia, Automation, and Abundance given
the current economy.

We then choose one of the six essential aptitudes to workshop:
empathy. How fascinating to see what teachers perceive as the
frustrations and rewards of programmers, the assumptions that
programmers make about grad students, etc.

Erin Murphy, a high-energy millennial with an interest in just about
everything, made an astute observation about empathy. Why not
empathize with others when things are going well for them and not just
when things are going badly? Why not use the power of empathy to
learn what people experience when they’re at the top of their game?

Personally, I had a great time on Friday and enjoyed meeting the
random people who will show up at events like this. I’m not sure if
we should do another one, do something else, do nothing, or just have
a drink and wait for the beginning-of-school-year madness to die
down. Any thoughts?

Hello Everyone,

Following up on Becky's note about the book club, I thought it was a really interesting meeting and I felt like it sparked my creativity and encouraged me to enhance some of my right brain skills! Mary, the meeting facilitator, talked about an activity she participated in before where people had to create "failure resumes" and talk about how their failures have shaped who they are and made them stronger individuals. On that note, I thought I'd give it a shot and create my own failure resume. Instead of listing specific failures, I chose to list what I guess we would call weaknesses and how they have each affected my life in both negative and positive ways. It's a great exercise in self awareness and also makes you appreciate yourself more - for better and worse!

I think the failure resume exercise falls directly in line with some of the high-touch/high-concept exercises than Daniel Pink mentions in his book. Give it a try and see how you feel knowing that your weaknesses/failures have been just as important in shaping who you are as your strengths/successes! I think it will really help you find some more empathy and meaning in your life (two of the aptitudes that Daniel Pink describes as important for the 21st century). Feel free to check out my own failure resume at my blog:

I would love to get together again sometime with a group of people to do some creativity enhancing exercises. If the education system is full of more creative/free-thinking individuals, then I think we will only increase the possibilities for positive change.

Regards,

Hi all,

Erin, I just had the chance to check out your failure resume.  Well done!  You bet I'd hire you.

I'm more than up for reassembling to do some more creativity-boosting work.  Maybe on a monthly basis, something very informal?  Are there any other interested parties out there?

Take care,

Mary

I’d definitely be interested and would be more than happy to help you find activities.  About a year ago, my mom and I bought the web domain freecreativity.us and never did anything with it… but our original goal was to fill the website with ways for people to boost their creativity, so maybe this would be a good place to get ideas.

I'd very much like another event, as I was unable to attend the lunch
due to a prior commitment. That's a great domain you have there, Erin!

Hi all!

Erin, I loved your failure resume too!  I think it’s an exercise that I’m going to try too!

I’m interested in upcoming meetings as well.  Please count me in!

Cheers,

Lisa
