Jerome David Salinger (/?sæl?nd??r/; January 1, 1919 –
January 27, 2010) was an American writer best known for his novel The
Catcher in the Rye.
Salinger published several short stories in Story

The Catcher in the Rye was published in 1951 and became an
immediate popular success. Salinger's depiction of adolescent alienation

read and controversial.[a]
The success of The Catcher in the Rye led to public
attention and scrutiny. Salinger became reclusive, publishing new work
less frequently. He followed Catcher with a short story collection, Nine
Stories (1953); a volume containing a novella and a Il giovane Holden

two novellas, Raise High the

published work, a novella entitled "Hapworth 16, 1924," appeared in The
New Yorker on June 19, 1965. Afterward, Salinger struggled with unwanted

his daughter.

herself Jewish after marrying Salinger's father.[10] Salinger did not

measures to conform, such as calling himself Jerry.[13] His family Il

actor.[15] His parents then enrolled him at Valley Forge Military
