Dear all,

I want to propose to you that we offer an award/certificate/honorable mention to those students who are first authors of papers that got an overall mark from the reviewers equal to or above 5.
According to my research, this makes up a list of 9 people: 4 from EvoAPPS, 2 from EuroGP, 2 from EvoMUSART and 1 from EvoCOP.
The list is as follows:

Assunção Filipe University of Coimbra Coimbra Portugal EuroGP 5,1250
Bazargani Mosab Queen Mary University of London London United Kingdom EvoAPPS 5,3330
Berman Alexander AI_am Gothenburg Sweden EvoMUSART 5,2500
Engebraten Sondre FFI Oslo Norway EvoAPPS 5,5000
Martins Tiago University of Coimbra Coimbra Portugal EvoMUSART 5,2500
Meier Almuth University of Oldenburg Oldenburg Germany EvoAPPS 5,0000
Moreira Rafaela Priscila Cruz CEFET-MG Belo Horizonte Brazil EvoAPPS 5,0000
Smith Robert Jacob Dalhousie University Halifax Canada EuroGP 5,1875
Thomson Sarah Louise University of Stirling Stirling United Kingdom EvoCOP 5,1875

(but please double check in case there are any mistakes)

We can publicise this on the website, or announce it at the conference.

Any comments?
Best,
A*

Great idea but... Should we remove those whose author's list is in alphabetical order?

Just joking... But possibly we should award all papers with an avg  >=5 where a student is among the authors AND gives the talk.

Thanks Stefano and Alberto for giving me more work!!

There is only one case for which what you point out can happen (paper with 5 or above, with student as second author) but as a general rule, I'd rather stick to my original list, for several reasons:
  • Being the first author is an indication that the student's contribution was substantial. Being the last of, say, 5 authors doesn't reveal much, even if the student is the one who presents
  • We might not know who presents till the last minute. Who is going to be checking that?
  • If authors see there is a prize attached they might decide to hand the presentation over to the student, even though her/his contribution was slim
  • Would they also deserve an award if the presentation was rubbish?
Giving an award to few people and for good, clear reasons makes the award relevant. If you give it to too many then it becomes irrelevant. Three of the nine are also nominated for Best Paper, and we should emphasise that in order to show that "our" students are good.

I have nothing against Filip Asuncao but it appears  he is first author just because authors are listed in alphabetical order and possibly not for his substantial contribution, and (I did not check) most probably the same applies to the two students whose initial is B... So, to be at least fair, I would add that single student whose only fault may be just being listed as second author because of a wrong initial!

It might be the case with Assunção (I will check) but it is certainly not the case with Bazargani (authors are not in alphabetical order); and with Berman it is difficult to say, as there are only 2 authors.
And it is certainly not the case with the other student I referred to (authors not in alphabetical order either)

In any case, I'd say that if authors are in alphabetical order it must be becasue they are all perceived as having contributed similarly.

Hi there,

Risking to add more entropy to the discussion, how do we know which authors are students? Was there some tick box when submitting (I honestly cannot recall), or is it known from registrations?

Regarding the shortlisting criterion, it is probably excessive to include any paper with mark >=5 in which a student is in the author list regardless of the position, but likewise restricting to the first position is too stringent. FWIW, the guidelines of my university as to which publications can support a student's PhD thesis indicate that s/he has to be the first or second author; I guess other universities might follow similar criteria, so I would be in favor of a more relaxed filter and include that paper with a student as 2nd author.

Cheers,

Carlos

how do we know which authors are students?

Registrations. On the one hand, it is when they actually have to *prove* they are students (ticking a box when submitting would not mean much); on the other, we only want to give recognition to people who are actually present.

so I would be in favor of a more relaxed filter and include that paper with a student as 2nd author.

Although your argument is good, it was actually my mistake: there's no paper/student in this situation.

I also got confirmation that Assunçao is not first author due to alphabetical reasons, but to his own merit.

Best,
A*
