to Marco Andreacchio
Detractors of medieval Christianity have long targeted St. Augustine for having taught of eternal damnation (involving "bodily suffering" after the dissolution of our bodies). Yet, detractors have tended to rely on prejudices and mockery to mask their ignorance of St. Augustine's actual arguments. When read with a minimum of care, the Bishop emerges as a Platonic rationalist at heart. What he says about eternal damnation is fully compatible with the classical Platonic tradition at its best.
