This occurs with solar storms, but given this source is millions of billions of times further away it is interesting this had space weather effects.

I thought solar storms were mainly proton (i.e. charged particle) flux from the Sun.  How do gamma rays create this VLF current flow?  Is it just that they create a lot of ionization?
