Colour me sceptical, but this sounds like overly sensationlist (mis-)reporting.

Possibly they referring to organoids - brain-like clusters of neurons
grown from scratch that would be very useful for drug testing, and
would never have been conscious at any point in time.

The article comes from the journal Science, one of the two most respected scientific journals on the planet (the other being Nature) And it is certainly NOT known for being  "overly sensationlist" or misreporting.

I didn't know what publication it was since you didn't provide a link.

I googled the email sibject, and found the article in science - so apparently
they are talking about extracting and reviving brains from recently
deceased corpses, not organoids as I first thought.
