"Just as the hand, held before the eye, can hide the tallest mountain, so the routine of everyday life can keep us from seeing the vast radiance and the secret wonders that fill the world." Chasidic, 18th Century
It's Elul, the Jewish month that beckons us to prepare for the new year. Each morning, imagine that your alarm clock sounds the shofar. The great blast is calling - no, pushing you to take stock.
It's at this time of year that the lines between our spiritual and profane lives are seriously, intentionally blurred. We're asked to take a good, long look -- day after day -- into our intentions, thoughts, actions, presentations...into all of our relationships of the last year. Each day this month, use your innate gift to reflect and be brutally honest without getting caught up in the surrounding stories. Recount when and how were you were your best self and when were you sub-par? Inventory your life's blessings, regrets and sorrows. How did you nourish and neglect your body? Draw out your compassion and courage and list those that you can forgive and those from whom you can ask for
forgiveness.
Looking back on our last year shakes us out of the daze of chaos and complacency to live our lives in our highest. Get going! Heed the shofar's call and wake your inner-self up. |
