Who among us is running Everest 5.x in Windows 10?

When I try to run the executable I receive "Class not registered" error dialog box and while the client opens it will not allow me to open a company.

I ran the compatibility troubleshooter and tried with Windows 7 and Windows XP compatibility enabled with the same error resulting.

Anyone worked around this?

I was considering running windows 7 or XP in a VM.

Thanks

Anyone had any luck since 2015?

I run Everest on Hyper-V in windows 10. There's a few minor workflow issues (like getting a document from the VM to the host machine) but I've been working this way since Windows 10 was released.

Not bad if you're a technical user, but not sure I'd recommend it for the average user, because occasionally there will be VM crashes or what not.

I run a copy of it in Windows 10 using VMWare workstation & Windows 7 on the virtual machine. It's nice because I can print right through the host pc without any problems and can drag and drop between virtual/physical desktop without any issues. Of note - VMWare Workstation 8 worked fine, but I saw big performance increases after upgrading to 12...

I wanted to revive this thread.

I'm currently using Everest 5.0.3.5.  I've had only a couple of users up until recently and we've been using remote desktop right to the server 2003 SBS and connecting to localhost and the client is FAST!

I've recently taken on a couple of new employees who need Everest access.

I'm working with various options to get them connected.  I've tried the following:

Windows XP in a Virtual Box VM under Windows 10pro 64.
Everest client on windows 10pro in compatibility mode (win xp) run as administrator

These two solutions are painfully slow.

Opening a document from a browser takes between 13-15 seconds.

The client on local host on the server does the same task in less than a second.

There's nothing wrong with the wifi connection from the clients.  Tested with speedtest.net and LAN file transfers.

I've also tested it with clients on the CAT-5 Lan.  Same slow response.

Is there something in the network settings I'm missing?  Has anyone seen this and resolved it?  I've tried turning the windows firewall off completely, in case that was getting in the way.  But I've tried this on multiple windows machines now with the same result.

Question, why would these users not just RDP in or better yet ~ publish a "remote app" with Windows 2008R2. With the remote app functionality makes it seem like to an end user like they are running the application locally but they are really running everything on the server. This allows you to not have to worry whatsoever about the end user operating system as well. I personally am a MacBook Pro user and run remote app on my macbook when testing things that we are integrating or developing. Most of the clients that we support now prefer this methodology as well as it cuts down significantly on the windows security permissions you have to deal with. The users just have an Everest icon on their desktop that they double click that then launches Everest right there within.

If you're running RDP and having speed issues there then you should check the resources on the server, you may be maxing out. You should check perfmon if that is the case then adjust your resources accordingly. We wind up putting all of our stuff / client stuff typically within Amazon's AWS or with another server management partner that is about 20-30% less than AWS. As a result, it is very quick and easy to adjust the server resources within seconds cost effectively.

Let us know if you'd like to discuss any of this further.

Martec,
  Thanks for your response.

The issue with RDP at the moment is the Everest server we run is Windows Server 2003 SBS.  This only allows two concurrent rdp connections.

This worked when there were only two of us needed access, however I've just taken on new employees and now need 4 and up concurrent connections.

I've just double checked the server resources.  It's idling doing nothing usually and spikes to perhaps 3% cpu and <10 meg change in the RAM when a client requests a document remotely.  So that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I'm going to try to run a VM along side the Everest server VM next week, this will help me eliminate the physical network as the bottleneck.  '

I have got a license of Windows Server 2008 which isn't doing anything right now.  I don't know anything about the Remote App feature of the OS.  I will take a look.

I'll report back where we go from there.

Cheers.

In 2003, there isn’t a lot you can do with the RDP. Especially since SBS as it is limited to 2 users only and with SBS there is no way to expand it.

If you launch a side box for 2008R2 then you could buy an “open license” for RDP based on user or device. They are not outrageous. Then you can expand to your hearts delight all of your users. We had 50 users for one client connecting via this method over 4 locations. We have another today that has about 25 users over 3 locations. Because of their sizes, they have “more application servers” for everest however everyone comes in through one remote app gateway.

The nice thing about an open license from 2008 onwards is that it is frontward compatible. We MT360 just within the last 2 weeks moved our entire server infrastructure for testing and development from AWS to a new partner that does end-to-end server management very cost effectively. In the process we launched 3-4 2008R2 servers, a couple 2012 servers (for everest testing) + some 2016 servers for our own solutions + acumatica instances. All of our users can log into all of the boxes because of the open license.

There is another everest organization that I/we know from years ago that normally has decent rates on these licenses if you would like the referral and support others within the EV community (something we believe in), otherwise most everywhere has the licenses.

Using remote app in the ways mentioned is BY FAR the best way to extend the life of your Everest Software investment. You can have modern OS’s (win10, iOS, macOS etc) with a simplified user management structure.

As always, we’re around if you’d like to discuss further. May be good to connect sometime regardless just to get a complete picture of all the other ways on how to maximize and extend the investment you’ve made into the platform over the years.

Good luck!

A

We would love to use this route but, we use the POS so I am assuming you wouldn't be able to have the POS printer receipts and drawer open since they are attached to the local machine?

My other concern with putting the server off-site is our multi company dongle.

We have the USB key which allows us multi company access to Everest.

I have looked into software solutions to replace the physical dongle, but I haven't come up with any solution. So unless anyone has a work aound for that I'm stuck with hosting on-site

POS machines are supported and work over this configuration. The second of the accounts I mentioned, with 25 or so users over 3 locations, they use POS. The other customer also used POS for their 1 retail store and did everything over RDP.

RDP supports com port mapping.

There is a solution for this as well… A couple of them actually. These are not “out of the box” solutions.
