Good Afternoon, Folks!
Welcome to the 3rd week of the SYDNEY FESTIVAL with all of the free
things seriously hitting their stride. You know, the nice thing about
the Sydney Festival (these days) is the amount of things for the
public, not just for the art-elite. Saying that, This week are a
number of free events (at least as big as last weekend's Jazz In The
Domain). This weekend THE SYDNEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA performs SYMPHONY
UNDER THE STARS (I still use the old name) and of course, many more
paid events such as theatre, THE SPIEGLETENT, music arts and displays
all over the city from Parramatta through to the CBD. It's all so very
good. I should also not go past that BIG DAY OUT is on this Friday
(yes... Friday) in case you'd forgotten, highlighting the talents of
Neil Young. There will be MANY people there... and remember - there
WILL be sniffer dogs at the entrance and (this year) potentially in
the crowds.
Oh yes - there's also a little thing happening next Monday called
AUSTRALIA DAY - Public Holiday, Ferry Races, Concerts, Fireworks -
it'll be a day with a Tuesday morning hangover I am sure.
They've just announced that SOUNDWAVE 2009 will be held at EASTERN
CREEK RACEWAY. That's lovely for those who live there, and those who
drive. The venue means that there will be a slump in drink sales, and
I have bad memories of Guns & Roses out there. It's a bad venue, and
it will not be good for the event.
At least this means that I will save money in not going.
Well, Flickerfest is over for another year, and this year there were a
great many excellent short films in competition. The International
films were (as always) excellent - does anyone know why the
Nertherlands/Denmark have so many very good short films? Also, for
once, Australian short films were very VERY good this year (overall)
mostly they're a bit hit-and-miss. Next year, I recommend you get a
season pass and spend the week at Bondi Beach watching quality
National and International short films.
We're into the Awards Season, now, with the Screen Actor's Guild
Awards coming up in a week's time. Of course I'll be waiting for the
Oscar nominations this Friday morning at Half-past midnight, and then
rushing about trying to see as many of the films as I can before the
Awards are announced one month later at the end of Feb - look for
SYDNEY SCREENING to be organising attendances to the Pre-Awards
Screenings (they'll announce them on LiveJournal, and Facebook I am
sure).
OK, I think that's my lot. Not a very short intro this week. So, let's
just get on with the process of putting this list out :)
