About Rasaaloka - the unusual art genre
Rasalok is a unique aesthetic art form evolved by the practise of the family of artist Deepika Dorai over
three generations . It is a classical tradition with origins in the festival of dolls - Navarathri.
The artistic practise of Rasalok involves the mingling of various artistic streams. And is honed by many
years of classical learning .

Deepika Dorai no longer uses pre existing dolls .
She imaginatively handmakes her characters and depicts a moment from our
rich classical lore .

She sculpts , paints, stitches costumes, composes jewellery and creates her own characters with dramatic expression.
And she handworks from scratch the charming and relevant surroundings using multiple media .
All in miniature proportions in an innovatively illuminated handmade ministage .
The artist' s theatrical recital enhances the intricate details of the moment .

These novel processes breathe dynamism and movement into the still art form .


The many performances - during and after the 10 day festival- over the last few years at Bimba first in Chennai
and now in Bangalore have delighted many thousands who flow into the cosy and intimate thetare
room created by the artist .
