Adding icon works only sometimes. What is proper procedure?

I've downloaded app, but when I click on a Google calendar entry and click on the flair I want to add to it, it only works sometimes.

Add your calendar event, save it. Go back into it and then add the flair, save it again.
I find that when I create a new event this is the sequence I have to use in order to get the flair to 'stick'.
