I'm still using the "old" calendar and flairs are working just fine. I hope they continue to work. Is everyone else still finding that they work with the old version of Google Calendar?

Yes...I am using the old calendar and old flairs...still working :)

I hope Seb is almost done with new extension that will allow Emojis to be inserted without too much effort.

I'm actually quite happy using the new revised calendar in conjunction with selected emojipedia flairs, the access to each one which I have conveniently located on my toolbars in chrome and firefox. I also use the stylish extension and specifically the google calendar redesign style to make the calendar look terrific. Applying the flairs is quick enuf for me, I feel no need to return to the old calendar even if the flairs still worked there.

I'm sorry guys I haven't been working on that extension, from what I understand you found a way to deal with that ?
Cheers

Steve, would love to know how you do that! Which emojipedia flairs? And which calendar redesign tool/extension? Could you link to them? Thanks! I use flairs extensively, and am really upset at losing them.

Sure, I'll post later with some screenshots and links if you can't figure it out. I did an earlier post a while ago, I think that described it, although that did not include using the stylish extension/add-on, etc.

Everyone uses a calendar in their own way, what takes too much time for one, is quick for another. This is what works for me...

Summary:

Basically I use flairs from the emojipedia site. I click on the one I want to use, click on the adjoining copy button, then go to my calendar which is on another tab, and paste the flair on the title line before I enter the description.  That simple.

Specifically:

I went to the emojipedia site, and picked out flairs that I have used previously that I commonly use, about 20-25. As is evident in the attached screenshot, I use lots of icons on my toolbar so space is at a premium. But rather than put my selected flairs in a folder which I did originally, I simply added them to the end of my toolbar.  Because of the number, the first couple appear on the toolbar, the rest appear in a list which are displayed when you click the end of the toolbar (see screenshot).  The flairs that I use the most often, I put at the top of the list.  In the screenshot I think you can see in my case it consists of the red question mark and the red exclamation mark, as those are the ones I honestly use most often--they actually sit on the toolbar so I don't even have to click the end of the toolbar to open the list.  To even make it faster, since if you click on one of your flairs, it takes 5-10 seconds for the tab to open up to hit the copy button, I have tabs always open that already have my most frequent flairs loaded, eg the red question mark, the red exclamation mark, the information symbol and the dollar sign.  That way when I click on the tab with the flair I want to use, I can immediately hit the copy button.  I find clicking on the emoji flair's copy button and then going over to the tab that holds your calendar, is pretty quick.  In my settings, I have those tabs open up automatically when I start chrome or firefox.  btw, I use this method in both firefox and chrome.  I find it only takes me a few seconds to retrieve the flair I want, hit the copy button, and then move back to my calendar where I either have a new calendar add already open and waiting, or its sitting in my clipboard to be pasted after I open up a new entry.

Separately, nothing to do with the flairs, I also use (1) in chrome, the stylus extension; and (2) in firefox, the stylus add-on, links for both are below.  If you are not familiar with stylus, it's pretty cool, it's basically an engine that allows you to create or apply styles to any particular page.  My gmail page is truly awesome, when I'm sitting in Starbucks, I get crowds :)

The style that I use is google calendar redesigned which I've actually used for a long time.  It's been updated for the new revised calendar in google.  You apply the style once you have installed the above stylus extension in chrome and the addon in firefox.  works the same in both chrome and firefox.  Link is below:

Have fun...

Another way to address this is to enable the Windows emoji keyboard in Windows 10.

Windows key and semi-colon pressed at the same time brings up the emoji keyboard. Then pick the emoji and insert it in the text description of the event and you're done.

Not as elegant as the event flairs gadget (which I hope is updated for the new "required" Google calendar), but it can be useful.

If only there was a way to allow a user to edit the displayed emoji's (delete ones you have no need of, add others, create a custom category, etc.  To my knowledge (?) that is not possible. Unfortunate.  There are only a couple there I'd ever use.

They worked until today for me. Now I have no option to revert to the "classic" calendar.

Worth trying EmojiKeyboard too:

They have a Chrome extension that gives access to Emojis from Chrome toolbar.

Also the Win10 Touch Keyboard has Emojis.

The problem is that we are unable to customize these options and ease of use is not available, which was easily done using flairs, hence a custom solution/extension is very much required or wished by many of us using flairs on old version of calendar.

Both options have a "recent" section so not difficult to find emojis you use often, and the first has a search facility.

I'm not saying they are as good as event flairs, but pining for the past may be a waste of your time.

You're mistake is that you're searching extensions.  Read the detailed post I did earlier on this thread.  The emojipedia site is located at https://emojipedia.org/

Everyone has their own preferences, all I can say, I'm very happy with the revised Google calendar, using the method I outlined earlier, and using the Stylish extension in google and addon in Firefox and the related style that I referenced.

Google ain't bringin' it back, accept it, move on and find something that works, imho.

Daisy had replied to my post, and my earlier reply to her today was to her.  The emoji link I referenced in my reply to her, is totally different from and has nothing to do with that extension and those emoji's.  For my method that I'm happy with, I do not use any chrome emoji extension.

Personally I wouldn't use that Chrome extension you referenced because (1) it has nothing to do with my method that I outlined earlier in this thread that I'm personally happy with; (2) it does not contain the emoji's that I need and like.

Everyone to their own :)

The emojipedia option is a workaround whose capability are much appreciated, but they are more like a band-aid, a temporary fix till you or Google come up with a way of having (& creating/modifying) event flairs in Google calendar. Please don't give up on us & this need.

Mmh... I need to figure out how much time I would need to implement this as an extension. Also, I don't want to "compete" with another solution that seems to fit at least some of your needs (or needs for some of you). Anyway, I'll investigate (I promise) and come back to you.

Sebastien,
Flairs is totally different from the work-arounds some have come up with. This would not be in competition with what they use. The calendar is now much more inconvenient to use because you can no longer edit an event without opening the event’s page and then saving your changes. Having to also use a workaround is just too much extra work to make me happy, and I assume others feel the same.

I would love an extension that had your flairs + (if possible) allowed users to add their own from jpgs, as your flairs did! I know it wouldn't be quite as easy to use, but it would be better than emojis.

I miss many personally created flairs via your extension to best organize my calendar. And many of the ones listed in emojipedia don't even show anything (e.g. try adding an American flag to an event). Any promises from your investigating creating a solution to the "new" Google calendar's limited emojipedia?

Re-implementing event-flairs would be a big development I'm not willing to get into, for 2 main reasons. First I don't really have time now to invest on this project right now, and second (more importantly) I'm worried Google will, in the end, remove the possibility of having flairs on a calendar event (not talking about a emoji inside a title, but a real icon, beside the title). When you think about it, this flair feature isn't exposed anymore, by any program that I know. Basically, Google could silently kill that feature and remove it from calendar's internals, without warnings since it's not officially used anymore. So I'm afraid this investment (development time) would be wasted yet another time by Google...

I just wish Google would allow us to create our own flairs, as I had quite a number of them that are not in the emoji encyclopedia….

Hi Sebastien,

You mentioned, "this flair feature isn't exposed anymore, by any program that I know".

I am still using them via Calengoo on iPhone. On the Google Calendar on this page you will see that some dates have the musical note flair next to them.
  • On the dates where the flair is grey it was added via Calengoo
  • On the dates where the flair is black, it was added directly in Google Calendar before the change to current version
There are dates with the black flair after Google changed Calendar because I created them by Duplicating and then editing an old event.

I hope this is helpful to know,

Best wishes,

Liz
