I just wanted to post that I finally have landed a job! I have been
searching and searching for MT jobs, and I put in a couple resumes and
took a couple of tests, but didn't do that great on them. I tried to
get the Internship position with Entrada, but they were full at the
moment.
I started searching Craigslist and also my local newspaper for MT
positions. I did find one at my local hospital here in town that was
hiring for an MT position. I sent in my resume and never heard
anything back. I sent them an email asking if the resume was
received.. etc. etc.. and never heard anything back!
I was going through jobs through my local online newspaper, and I
stubbled across a position for a Transcriptionist, but it was for a
legal transcriptionist. I figured what the heck! I sent in my resume
on a Monday, and received a call back on a Friday asking for my
references and for a chance to do an interview! I sent in my
references and got a call back 2 days later to just do a phone
interview! During the phone interview I was told that the selection
was between me and another woman. The next day I was offered the
position!
I met with my boss last week Wednesday, and she got me all set up with
my foot pedal and downloading software on my computer etc. etc. I
will be transcribing Court Depositions!
It is a subcontractor position, and I will be getting paid $1.50 per
page. A deposition is 24 lines per page, but the margins on the page
are at about 2 inches or so.. and it is double spaced! So, the pay is
actually pretty good. Most of the depositions are between 20-50 pages
long.. with longer ones (most murder trials) between 175-250 pages! I
will be getting paidk the $1.50 per page for 2 months and then it will
increase to $2.50 per page.
I am really excited about the postion! I also have to transcribe the
report Verbatim.. so, I don't have to correct ANY grammar or
contractions etc. etc. I just type EXACTLY what was said! I don't
even have to transcribe in complete sentences! If the person is
rambling, I can insert a period where I think it should be needed and
then start a new sentence.. or I can just leave it the way it is being
dictated! The only thing I can leave out is words like Um, or ugh..
since these are used a lot! My boss gave me some practice work for
the next 4-5 days to get comfortable with the set up etc.
I also do not have to do ANY formatting! My boss has the template
that she has to use and she just send that to me.. so I use the
template and just fill things in and type.
If you can find a legal transcription position, don't hesitate to
apply for it!

Thanks everyone! I should be getting my first "assignment" either
today or tomorrow! She is going to give me one of the shorter
depositions to start with.. probably about 10 or so pages.. just to
get the feel! I am excited, yet nervous! I will let you all know how
my first assignment goes!
