I don't know if anyone would be interested in this or not ...

While I am working now for Entrada, I'm finding that the money I am
earning isn't as much as I need. I'm still trying to learn some
tricks to increase my speed, but I'm also finding that at the times I
am working, often I am sitting and waiting for work to be available.
I have been supplementing this with another transcription job at a
company called Quicktate. I don't know if any of you have heard of
this company before, but they are legit - I've worked for them now for
nearly 3 years off and on. You are an independent contractor - there
is no schedule - work when you want, if you want. Quicktate actually
has 2 sides - with Quicktate you are typing voicemail messages which
sends the text back to the customer (like text to talk/talk to text).
They don't pay huge - 1/4 cent per word - however, I seem to average
about $8 per hour (sometimes more) which is (sadly) a lot more than I
am making per hour editing. Another part of Quicktate is a company
called iDictate. They offer general transcription which includes
typing letters, office minutes, phone conversations, you name it.
They also have medical transcription occasionally. The pay for
iDictate is 1/2 cent per word - I am usually able to average about
$12-13 per hour here. Again, this is a work when you want/if you want
- no schedule. When you decide to work, you simply log in - it is all
done online. The pay is 2 times per month, on the 16th and the 30th,
and they pay via paypal.com, so you would have to have an account
there. I can vouch that this is 100% legit work, constant work 24
hours per day, and I have never not been paid on time and what I am
owed.

It may not be for everyone, but for anyone interested in keeping up
their typing skills and earning a little extra, it may help.

To apply:

Complete the typist Quiz and Questionaire: http://tinyurl.com/qttest2

Request a Typist account and sign Agreements at
https://typists.quicktate.com/transcribers/signup

PS - I don't get anything for referring you - I just wanted to throw
this out there as a possibility as it has really helped my family.

PPS - Don't misunderstand me, either. I love Entrada! I will
continue to work for them as it is a fun job, and I feel that I am
learning a lot to help further a career (in the future) in medical
transcription. I just need that little bit of extra $$

Hi lisa,
It's all done via the Quicktate website so there is no external programs or software that you have to install.  Like I said, it is probably one of the easiest jobs I've ever had.

One more question (I'm asking for someone else from another list I'm on.)  Where do the answers to the quiz questions come from?  I've looked thinking there is some kind of doc or manual to read, but I haven't found such.

And, when you say it is all through the website, do you download the file, or is it kind of like Career Step where the file is imbedded in the webpage?

The files come through their website sort of like career step. As far as the quiz questions, I may have to get back to you. Its been more than 3 years since I've taken it.  I'll look at the quiz later this weekend and get back with any help I can (we're in the car driving to the coast right now :-D )

HI Lisa -

I just went through and looked at the quiz - there are no trick questions, it's just asking for your personal info - name, address, phone number, email etc.  The one thing that may be tripping your friend up is it does ask what yahoo messenger user name you set up (because they send out alerts via YIM to let people know when it is busy).  The instructions for that are actually the 2nd thing I listed - requesting a typist account and signing agreement, so I guess I may have posted them in the wrong order.  Have your friend request a typist account, sign the agreement, and THEN take the "quiz".  Hopefully that will eliminate the confusion.  If it doesn't, let me know.  Like I said, when I went into the "quiz" it is just asking for your personal info.  There are some sample sound files on the quiz that you need to copy/paste the url into your browser to listen to/type so they can verify that you are able to transcribe properly also, but that is a simple copy/paste - no trick questions.

Let me know if I can be of more help!

On one of the items - not sure if it is quiz or questionnaire - it asks things like if the message is longer than 120 characters, what do you do?  (Something like that.)  It seems to be looking for a certain answer.  Thanks for your help!

Oh - gotcha!  When a file pops on your screen, it will say "Do not type more than 120 words" or 100 words, 500 words, whatever the case.  That is because they charge the client a "per word" fee.  I think 75 words is the minimum. That just means if a file comes in that says "do not type more than 120 words" and the file is longer than that, you simply stop at 120 and just leave the sentence "hanging".  They have a word counter built in on the website so you always know how much you have typed - there is never a question of if you typed too much.

Hope that helps!

Myken,

HI! If I could, I was wondering if I could shoot a question at you... In your description you said that this was something that you log in just whenever you want to and work, right? I was wondering what the deal is with the Yahoo messenger and them sending you jobs that you take if you want to take them.... Do they do that like if they have something STAT or something like that? That little bit just confused me. I thought I might try this for mornings and maybe some weekends when the jobs are low in our queue. Might be something if I can get the position to not only pad the resume but also save for Christmas on the side... Just thinking ahead. In any case I really appreciate you taking the time to pass this along. :)

Oh, and Lisa, I am almost at minimum wage now... Not quite but getting there. They threw us into a lump sum of doctors making it a little more difficult to use my shortcuts or I might have already made it. :) Again, you are a Godsend Lisa. It never  ceases to amaze me-  your kindness.

And hello to everyone else.... Don't be shy. Keep everyone updated on how things are going. I finally got my certificate, the official looking one the other day. That felt really great.

Sorry one more quick question- is there any way around the Firefox or Safari or would I have to download it and use a different internet conection just for Quicktate? I have Explorer 8 on here. Thanks again!

Hi Chasity,

Glad to hear you got your certificate - I'm still waiting on mine, so hopefully this week.  Also, glad to hear you're almost up to minimum wage!  I'm no where near, but I still like it!  I haven't really found any shortcuts yet either, I never was in a specific doctor's pool, always in the general one, so maybe that's why!  This week was rough for me as I'm dealing with severe allergies which cause my eyes to swell a bit making it harder to work, but I'm hoping to do better this coming week!

Anyway, regarding Quicktate - they ask you to keep Yahoo messenger open more specifically for iDictate as they  will message you directly to ask if you would like to take a file, and then the file is sent to you directly as opposed to going into a general pool.  Also, they will send out random messages letting people know that they are busy if you would like to log in to work.  They also send emails fairly regularly too, so if you don't have messenger pulled up, you won't be "out of the loop".  Honestly, I only really use Yahoo messenger if I am planning to work on iDictate files, otherwise, just for general Quicktate, I do not as it really, truly, literally is just logging on whenever you feel like it - no pressure.  The other thing I wanted to mention about Quicktate for anyone that might be interested - APPLY!!! Even if you think you wouldn't like it, or it wouldn't be enough money, or whatever.  There is no pressure so if you get on, try it, and hate it - you can just NOT work!  One of the best things about Quicktate is it is always there - you don't have a schedule, so there is never any pressure.  What I LOVE about it is that when we were in school, from the start (last June) I focused soley on school - didn't type a single word for Quicktate.  Didn't log into their site, nothing.  Not until we were done with school this spring...and guess what?  It was still there, there was still work to do, no questions about why haven't you logged in in 9 months?  I originally signed on with them in 2007 shortly after my daughter was born.  Some days I would work for 5 minutes.  Some days I would work for 8 hours.  And sometimes I wouldn't work for 9 months :).  And it didn't matter.  Honestly, even if it's just to save for Christmas money, or a vacation that you're planning for next year, or whatever.  In my family every little bit helps, and Quicktate is something that has always been there for us.  It isn't a big money maker, but we are all great typists, so there isn't any reason you couldn't at least pull minimum wage.  Like I said before, when I really sit down and focus I've been able to do around $10 per hour.  Another thing I forgot to mention - they have a progress tracker on their site that is live and in real time.  So when you're working, you can click over to work history and it will tell you your up-to-date earnings for that pay-period.  It's nice because some days I just have a $$ goal where I say (to myself) I need to earn $20 today.  I can work until I reach that amount and then be done whether it takes me 2 hours, 5 hours, or 30 minutes!  (I have to do this sometimes b/c I have 3 kids that are constantly in my ear, needing something, so usually I have to set my sights pretty low!!!)  Also, I find that it is somewhat of a motivator when you can see in real time where your earnings are.

Good luck to all of you - I'm still hoping to hear about someone getting on with a med trans company :)  I've certainly been applying, but haven't had any luck.  I'm grateful for the schooling anyway, as my dad always says, in the end, no one can take away your education!

Hello again!

Sorry, it only works on Firefox (PC) or Safari (Mac), so you would have to download one or the other - depending on what you have.  If you don't already have firefox, it's really quick and easy to install.

Myken,

I have honest to goodness been all over the site but I am stumped on 2 of those questions-- What happens when you ignore a Quicktate message or don’t type anything for 90 seconds? *and* What is the procedure for staying in touch with Quicktate while transcribing?

To the first question I was going to put nothing- of you ignore the message then nothing happens, no obligation right. But if you accept it and then donot type for 90 seconds..?? I would think nothing just in case your looking something up that was dictated and need to confirm it. (I had to look up a book title in the sample dictations.) Am I on the right track here?

As for the second, they use email, Yahoo messenger,  and Twitter to stay in touch, right? Is that while you are transcribing or just when you are looking for a job?

I may be making more out of this than I should, but I'd really hate to flub something because my brain is somewhat fried.... :)

Thank you again for taking the time to do this!

If you don't type for 90 seconds, the "file" will time out and go back into the pool, so if you have typed something you will lose that and not be paid on that file (remember most files are around 100 words (usually less) so chances are this really won't happen much unless you forget to log out when you step away - but even at that, no harm, no foul - the message simply times out and goes to someone else.  And the procedure for staying in touch - you are right, either via messenger, twitter or email, although I think they prefer you to use messenger over all of them, and email as a last resort.

Hope that helps!

Hi all -

I just wanted to say that according to some others that have more recently been hired on at Quicktate, they did take some time to be contacted.  I will say, however, that I received an email this morning indicating that Quicktate/iDicate has and immediate need for more typists and have opened up hiring right now ... hopefully that means you will be hearing something soon.
