Window whiskers

Has anyone bought the cat whiskers for the window channels lately? I ordered some from summit in March. After some time they informed me they were back ordered (drop ship from elsewhere). After several repeats of them asking if I still wanted to continue waiting, and estimated ship dates, I cancelled it in November.

So, anyone buy these recently? And they arrived? And they were satisfactory?

Also, minor vent, I’m sick of people advertising things for sale and they aren’t stocked. Meanwhile they have my money.

I recently got some from First Place Auto parts. I believe they drop shipped from the vendor, and got lucky because they shipped sooner than quoted. I think they quoted four weeks and I got them in two. I believe they are made in batches. They were either PUI or Top Cat.

I looked on their site, but I don’t see them for the early Valiants.
Perhaps I missed the window on acquiring these. I’ll keep looking.

Hello All,

I’m not sure how, but this turned into a story. TLDR version: back at summit for the whiskers.

First I went to the website Bob recommended. I saw a couple of possibilities, both said 8 pieces but one said “outers”. So I sent an email to ask the difference. Twice. Both times it came back undeliverable. 

So I started looking at all the possibilities again.

That led me to the slantsix site and the knower of many things, slsntsixdan. 10 years ago he told someone to order the pieces and the clips separately from Gary goers. As some may know, Gary is no longer with us. Gary had an amazing catalog of items, an impeccable reputation, and was as up to date as a phone book. 

What I learned was a company called Quirey bought all of his stuff, and they were producing Top Cat whiskers. I ended up calling them to order directly. And because…..they told me they sold the whiskers part of their company in October to a company called AMS Obsolete. 

Funny aside, this place bought Frank Mitchell’s stuff. He had his own reputation. A quote I read last week Frank was, “ I don't know why he doesn't have a bullet in his head"

So not Gary’s reputation. Frank has also passed on. 

Anyhow, called their number and got a busy signal multiple times.

At this point I’m wondering what the universe is trying to tell me. 

I’ll cut out a lot of the details, but I found that the actual felt strips are made by a place called CooperStandard. And they referred me to a retailer meccom industrial. Fun fact. Whiskers are sold in 8 foot sections. My door sections are 28” and the rear window is 20.5”. Add those and it’s 4 feet and a half inch. So 3 8’ sections because of that half I inch instead of two. Meccom sells them $50 a section. Plus shipping. You can see where this is going.

So I started over. And oddly ended up back at Summit. Who have a different (repop) version that they claim to have in stock. I’ve ordered those and I’ll let y’all know what shows up.

Here’s my review. In stark contrast to round one ordering whiskers from summit, these arrived in three days. They are Repop whiskers.

On the pros side, they fit, doors and rear windows. They are assembled securely with all the new clips where they should be (exception to follow).

The cons are mostly niggly. The one that I am the most unhappy with is the overall thickness of the middle (rubber?) portion. For some reasons one of my eight original sections seemed newer than the others, less worn but also the clips seemed more green. This allowed a direct comparison. The middle on the old ones is thicker and the whisker part looks to be more substantial.
One other niggle is my sedan has a clip that’s asymmetrical. At the rear end the metal of the car ends before the whisker does so the original section has a clip sooner on the run. The new ones are all the same. Doesn’t affect much but not oe like.
Also, these and all are black afaik. My originals were tan to match the car. I am fine with black but if originality is a concern, this might bug you.

I’ll also throw in that y’all who are spoiled with rear windows that roll all the way down have it way easier on replacing these things. Removing the glass would make it a doddle, but removing the glass is a lot of work. It’s doable without removing ibecause I did it, but it’s a real challenge to remove and replace these clips with the glass right next to it.

What about the seal between the front and rear glass.  I'm guessing that's not whiskers, but on my 65 Barracuda, all I'v glt left is the metal strip, and I know thats not enough to "seal" (from experience in the rain)...

This really depends on your desire to have a “perfect” result. A perfect result would only be possible if the windows are removed. An acceptable result doesn’t require that. Working around the glass definitely impacts clean replacement. 

I tried being very gentle but in the end tearing it out worked more efficiently. Like really get the first clip loose and then rip out the rubber. Two negatives to this method. One, the clip cutouts will deform a bit. I hammered them flat as much as possible afterwards. Two, the clips will remain in their slots so u have to get them out separately. The clips really clip in and it’s very difficult to get to where you can release them. I ended up finding that bending the clips outward as much as possible allowed the hidden part to let go. 

Clipping the new ones in is straightforward except for the sedan rear window that’s in the way. This would be far easier with the window removed. My car is more rat rod than trailer queen so bear that in mind. Function is way more important than form to me. Mostly. 🙂

Thanks for sharing! I personally don't want to deal with removing the glass. Mainly I don't want to remove my door panel since the fiberboard or whatever it is, is extremely brittle from 60 yrs of dry rot.

I don’t remember what got me to getting these, but after I had them i used them for a lot of things I wouldn’t have bought them for. Including manipulating the whisker into place with the window in the way. They work great at popping the door panel clips loose without prying in the card.
