Steve,
Just went through the ATF question on another Chrysler list I'm on. The best fluid to use is type F or FA. Avoid using any of the modern fluids to assure long term service. Evidently they have too much detergent in them for our old torqueflites and can affect the seals and clutch packs.

I put my val back on the road in 1994, it sat still for about 12 years before that.
Had it serviced once I think – I just put more fluid in it when it starts dropping out of first (drive) when stopped and DEAD COLD just after start up. This might happen every couple of years?
Then it goes fine.
Do these things ever die?
My only complaint is that the 273 sits at about 3000rpm on the freeway doing 100hph (60mph) but it just serves to remind me that there was a time when petrol was cheep – he he

I have the 1965 273 V8 with a 904 torqueflite8 (or something like that) Is it basically the same idea as the 727 but not as heavy duty?
