Hello all,

1964 Barracuda
Have any of you replaced the defroster tubes? These are the tubes (hoses) from the heater box to the defroster vents in the dash. If so, what is your source?

There's a guy on Ebay that will sell me new tubes for $50.00. Unless absolutely necessary, I just can't seem to justify that.

Thanks,
Dave

I know this is very little help, but I replaced mine about 10 years ago & bought it somewhere locally (Cincinnati area). They had a roll of it & sold it by the foot. I believe it was Kentucky Motors (a locally owned small AutoZone-type car parts place). It seemed like it was a couple of bucks per foot. It was a vinyl-type of material, not that brittle (now) original cloth stuff, but it had the wire in it & worked out just fine. In fact, earlier this year I had a heater core go out on my '62 Corvette & the hoses crumbled when I removed it. I had a couple of left over pieces from my Barracuda job (I save everything) & I had enough to do the Corvette. It was the same diameter.
Fifty bucks seems awfully steep. Keep looking!

Hey Mark, I’m willing t bet that if the guy still has some he could sell it all via EVBC.

I know I need some for four vehicles!

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or if I can be of any assistance.

I bought some several years ago from JC Whitney. It was reasonably priced, a lot less than $50.  Could've got enough for a school of barracuda at that price.  I also bet you could find something similar at NAPA or Advance or O'Reilly.

Mark,

Aren't the ends different sizes? Heater box end versus the vent end?

Dave,
My Barracuda is a '66 - I don't know it there was ever any difference in hoses from year to year, but I doubt it. I went to the garage to check. It is too 'busy' under the dash to see up to the vents. I think if it had been 2 different sizes on the ends I would have remembered it. Just measuring with my fingers, the hose is about 2" in diameter. If I'm wrong I'm hoping that someone who had done this more recently will clear things up.
If you want to call them to see if they still carry it, Kentucky Motors number is 859-431-0309, but you should be able to find this closer to where you are.

I just went out and looked at my hoses and new ducts.  These are the new reproduction ducts that a list member was selling back about 5-6 years ago and the ones I assume, are being sold on eBay and by Layson's.  The duct measures 2-1/2", and I have new hose here that is 2-1/2" and it fits nice and tight.  The outlets on my heater box measure 2-1/4", so it is confusing to say the least.  My original ducts are still in the dash, and the original hose is still there, it measures 2-1/4".   I can't tell if the original ducts in the dash are 2-1/4" or 2-1/2" until I remove them.  I'll keep everyone posted when I get one out.  I may end up wrapping some tape around the heater outlets to build up a little bulk to keep the 2-1/2" hose on the heater box in place and go that route.  It sure seems strange that the factory would use a hose with two different diameters.

I have a dash assembly removed from a car with the vents still in it.  The inside diameter is 2 1/4".  The outside diameter is about 2 3/8" .   I think the OEM hoses are larger at one end.  You could use 2 1/4" hose and put it inside the vent rather than over it.

Yes - that's the inexpensive answer.  The size that fits properly on the heater box holes fits inside of the dash vents.

The original duct tubes did have two different sized ends - it was tapered.  Assuming those are what are for sale at $50 from EBay, it makes sense.  They probably are custom made somewhere, and would not be as cheap as a length of a standard-sized tube.

I went with the cheap way, and think I used duct tape to hold the hose at the dash vent.

This is the link to the hoses and vents. I asked him if he would just sell the hoses. He said yes, $50.00.

Thanks for the link Dave. I think during the last go round on this topic, someone recommended putting a small hose inside a large hose. That seems like the most economically functional way to go.

Bob,

The original vents (which I'm using) are 2 1/2" diameter, one of the outlets on the heater box is 2' and the other is 2 1/4".  We Mopar freaks (term of endearment) chose to rebuild Mopars partly because of the challenge... right? Cheby parts are easy right?

Ma Mopar's probably laughing at this one. Don't cha think?

In any case, since the original hoses were brittle papery stuff, I know some one had to successfully replace them.

OK Don,
Now, I'm a bit more confused. My vent out side diameter is 2 1/2" on the nose. Once I saw your picture, I re- measured to be sure. Only because I'm a measure once, cut twice guy. I'm working on a '64 Plymouth Barracuda, non air.
