Last week, I joined colleagues and fellow members of the Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition (SEEC) on a U.S. Congressional visit to Strasbourg and Brussels to deliver one clear message to our European allies: the U.S. is still very much committed to strong energy and environmental policy.
While the Trump Administration’s policies actively work to dismantle U.S. climate progress, state, local, and business leaders across the country are more determined than ever to address the economic and climate goals of the American people. The majority of Americans want utilities they can afford, and the fact is that renewable energy is cheaper, more reliable, and faster to deploy. As we met with European Union, NATO and business leaders, we assured them that action is being taken across the U.S. to address the climate crisis with good policy that meets the economic and environmental demands of the American people. We found like-minded, pragmatic leaders in every meeting who understand that resilient communities, economic stability, and national security interests are aligned—and they want to work together toward a more sustainable future.
Our children and future generations are counting on our stewardship and strong leadership today to ensure their lives are safe and prosperous. This trip gave me enormous confidence that our trans-Atlantic partners are just as committed as we are to ensuring our planet and our people are cared for—with or without the support of this administration. I will continue to lead courageously in Congress, as I know strong climate policy is also good for the wallets, the health and the future of my constituents.
