If you have any custom templates in Office 2010, Office 2016 will not find them. There is no default location set for custom templates!

When you install Office 2016 it creates a sub-folder in your Documents folder called Custom Office Templates, but surprisingly it doesn't set this as the default save location for customised templates!!

You have two unbelievably complicated options, both requiring the archaic method of pasting a full folder path into Word options - for some reason Office 2016 doesn't offer a browse option to find the location of your custom templates:

Option 1. Use the new Custom Office Templates folder (recommended by me)
  1. In File Explorer, tick Hidden items in the View menu
  2. Navigate to where your customised Office 2010 templates are stored - c:\users\<YourUserName>\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templates
  3. Copy your customised templates and paste them into the new Custom Office Templates folder
  4. In File Explorer, navigate to the new Custom Office Templates folder, right click on the address bar and Copy address
  5. Open Word, File > Options > Save
  6. Paste the address into Default user templates location > OK
  7. Close Word then reopen
  8. To view your custom templates, go File > New. Where is says Featured    Personal, click Personal (not the Personal under the search box)
  9. Finally you see you old templates!!!!
  10. Repeat for all Office apps

2. Set your old templates location as the default
  1. In File Explorer, tick Hidden items in the View menu
  2. Navigate to where your customised Office 2010 templates are stored - c:\users\<yourusername>\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templates
  3. Right click on the address bar and Copy address
  4. Open Word, File > Options > Save
  5. Paste the address into Default user templates location > OK
  6. Close Word then reopen
  7. View your custom templates as in option 1
  8. Repeat for all Office apps

Have fun

John
