Mike here

Win 10 has a new browser Edge. When this first come with the earlier Win 10 it was almost totally useless, compared to Explorer and Firefox. It has improved a little, but as with all these programs comes wit its own problems.

The home page is one; this can be set in the settings by tweaking the Open with settings, remembering to click the + symbol to save the option. However this is only the home page when Edge starts, after that you get the Start Page with all the bumpf. No way yet to get fix this. Also no way of getting rid of all the bumf.

The second issue are tabs, they do not open in the home page but again on the start page. Also there is no option to go to the new tab when it is created - derr isn't that the reason we created it, to go there!

They have certainly kept it simple - I think I'll stick with IE and Firefox for the moment until they have iron out the wrinkles.

Hi Mike

Edge can be tweaked to nearly do what you want, particularly stop the bumf, it in certainly not obvious though.

Setting the Start page

As you said, Settings > Open Microsoft Edge with ... > choose A specific page or pages > Add new page - then type in www.google.com (or whatever) and click +
Then remove (X) any other pages listed

Showing the Home button and setting the Home button to a specific page
Settings > Show Advanced settings > turn on Show the Home button.  You *should* then see the option to set a specific page such as www.google.com with a Save button (not a + button like the Start page setting)
BUT when I initially turned on the Home button, these options didn't appear, I had to restart Edge then turn the button off/on again then they DID appear!!!

Simplifying the New Tab contents
You can stop the bumf but you can't make a new tab go to a specific page.
Settings > Open new tabs with > choose Top sites
Alternatively
When you open a new tab, the page contains a Customise button where you can customise and save what you see on the New tab page

Making a New Tab go to your Home page

Click New tab (+) then the Home button.  Can't be done in a single click.

Thanks John

It's all in the detail.

The new tab issue also presents an interesting thing, I choose open tabs in a blank page in the Advanced settings, so now at the bottom of the page a line of three options appears, including the Customise. So editing it to a blank page, does remove the bumpf and leave just the simple search box.
I wanted to be real tech and draw an arrow using Edge's pen to  this to show you but the pen option does not work when multiple tabs are open only if there is only one tab, nor does the Share option. Closing the first Start tab to have only the second tab does not activate these either, so no way round there...

Cheers Mike

Strange.  I just tried draw/share - I had 3 tabs open (one just showing the New Tab blank page) and I was able to draw and share on all of them.

But after that, when I tried to close Edge it wouldn't close.  I tried closing the tabs individually and it asked if I wanted to save each page.  When the last page closed, Edge froze and I had to force Windows logout and login again.  It is definitely still work in progress...
