Easter holidays are underway across Europe but for many they're getting off
to a slow start. In Germany, it has been stop-and-go along 80 kilometres of
motorways leading north, south, east and west. Accidents and extra checks at
the Dutch and Polish borders, because of the Foot and Mouth disease scare,
have added to the delays. Holidaymakers in Spain traditionally head for the
beach at Easter, to coastal resorts such as Benidorm.
And, though police say major hold ups on exits from Madrid have now eased,
motorists are running into problems closer to their destinations in Valencia
and Extremadura. In France, the on-going train strike has forced more people
onto the roads, though participation in the strike has now dropped from 35
per cent on Friday to just 23 per cent. But thousands of travellers are
still finding their journeys cancelled or delayed.
