Dear members
we did a great job so far but let me be honest: we are at strong risk of turning all our effort into failure because of the incapacity to reach out. 800 endorsements is just not good enough. We need at least 2000.

If not, the message we are sending will be: gov20 is just for social media consultants and geeks. If I were a minister, I would read as a result from our effort: we really don't have to bother about all this transparency stuff. It doesn't look at all as a vote winner. It's a hype.

Of course there could be plenty of good excuses and reasons. But the reality is: we risk a backlash. And I do believe this represents a serious limit of gov20 in general, not only of the Open Declaration.

You accepted to be part of the Steering Committee. We need to take ownership of the grim state of endorsements to the Open Declaration.

We need to make a strong big effort: we need to think strategically and act. I ask yo one question: is tweeting and blogging the best we can do? (of course do it if you haven't done so).

Facebook seems much more useful to reach out. To give you an example, Alberto promoted the Facebook campaign and we obtained 150 endorsement in one day. I changed my profile picture on facebook to the one below, gave a few interviews and am contacting the European Consumers Associations. Paul made a great video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcW3_qryVJc

The deepest question is: how do we make the EU and gov20 interesting for the non-geeks???

I know we are all very busy but we risk to damage the objective of open government, rather than promoting it. We all have to take responsibility.

Best, and thanks for your great support so far.
david

Well said, David! I might add that the Facebook group has shown some traction (1,032 members as I write, growing by circa 70 a day) and I would recommend leveraging it with another broadcast message asap. I don't think there is any risk of spamming, because my message of one week ago went to a much smaller group: more than half of the current members have never received anything from us.

Thanks, Jonathan, for the tip. Could you put together a message of support rallying and email these mlists?

A.

As I said, I'm going to be out of the loop for the next few days - so
probably won't be able to do this myself...

Hope someone else will though, as may get some more signatories from
these communities...

Best,

Jonathan

Yesterday I posted an announce in various sites along with the the nexa mailing list (nexa.polito.it) and  the globalvoices community (www.globalvoicesonline.com) and I get some interest... but today I don't see any extra signature :-(

GlobalVoices will  start a project of global monitoring about government transparency.. at the moment we are starting to collect some info.. you can see there
