Colleagues

As you will have seen, we are close to finalising the open
declaration, although it is still very much open for comments at
http://eups20.wordpress.com/draft-declaration/ .

We also hope that you will get involved with writing the detailed
document that will need to be ready by the Malmo event - so we have
just over a month to prepare it, which should be fine. We have a
template at http://eups20supportingdoc.pbworks.com/ and will start to
focus on this work in one week's time. Doing posts on the blog to
encourage involvement.

The immediate issue on which WE NEED YOUR HELP is suggestions for the
best ways of securing mass endorsement of the open declaration. We
will launch a Facebook group in one week's time, but what other ways
can we give people to signal their support for the declaration (for
example, if people do not use Facebook)? We want a simple attractive
place where people can go, read the declaration and do something to
show they support it?

All suggestions very gratefully received!

One off the wall thought I had while writing this is that we could
record a video of lots of different people reading the declaration and
then ask people to endorse it by becoming fans of the video. But I am
sure others will have much better ideas!!

durrrrrrrr. I forgot to mention YouTube in the last para as the place
where we would post the video and ask people to become fans. Again,
however, that would only work for people who have a YouTube account.
So maybe it is not the answer (but we should definitely use video in
some way as part of our strategy for engaging people).

Hi,

yes, video would help. but what we need, is a huge amount of video from various "readers".
We have had this kind of concept - but this is working, when there is really a vast amount contribution
...so that nearly every words can be said by different people - showing the power of representation...
I could defenately vote for this..

How about a widget wich each of us can distribute and post?!

Video is trickier than it seems. In my experience there are always
issues of bad lighting, bad audio, uneffective video presence... there
is the risk we may end up looking like amateurs.

The widget solution is elegant, but relies a lot on, what? The 20
blogs we run ourselves.

What about a Facebook group? It has native support for dumb-easy
sharing, everybody and their dogs have FB accounts and we could all
use our blogs, Twitter accounts or whatever to redirect people there.

Thanks, Paul: have you considered using: http://act.ly as part of the
process?

All the best,

And/or other kinds of petition tools (not quite sure what's out there
that's not tied to a particular government body).

In terms of outreach, it'll be important to identify and partner with
multipliers. Certain group on Facebook (participatory and open
government) or blogs come to mind. Maybe we can start a Google
spreadsheet or something and then split up the work (who contacts who).

I like the video idea, it's just a matter of how solid you want your
vote count to be.

hi all
thanks for your advice. we know from experience this works only if we find the skills.
At the moment, the skills of Paul and myself are good enough for a facebook group but not much else.
Who has skills and the time to do something more?
Or is there some kind of petitioning service we could use?
David P, your link didnt work for me can you resend

Finally, please tweet and re-blog the declaration asking for comments

Thanks

Hello David,
I myself came also to the conclusion that we best use the petition instrument.
Burgerlink (Citizenlink) has available an operational system that can also be used outside the Netherlands.
I'll copy my colleages to get in contact with you.
Greetings.

I was wondering if we can use pledgebank... the one regarding  http://www.it.pledgebank.com/AdaLovelaceDay was really a big success..

Re a video: might Europe-by-Satellite (http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/
ebs/welcome_en.cfm / http://www.youtube.com/user/eutube) be interested
in recording a short piece about the declaration, which could then
also be used elsewhere online?

how easy would be it be to build the widget? could you or someone you
know do it - for free :-) . If so, how long would it take to have it
available?

Paul,
Unfortunately we can't produce it ourselves, but I offered David Osimo
to use the Citizenlink ePetition website as a way to rally support
(amongst other channels).

Ok, I sort of got lost here. I'm writing a blog post to start
spreading the word, but I'm guessing maybe I'd better put this off
until we actually have a link that we can direct readers to.

All,

Apologies for having been so quiet. David are you just after some
marketing and communications advice on how best to spread the message?
I could have a think about this over the weekend but wouldn't have
much time as I have a few projects on the go at the moment (as I'm
sure you all do!)

All the best

Justin

Justin yes. We need to go viral. We had 70 endorsement on day 1 and if we keep this pace we'll never get to 5000, our real target.
So we need all the best social media advice we can get to make it work
but not only advice, we need action then to implement it!
Thanks
david

I will have a think about how you could get additional endorsement -
unfortunately I'm really only able to advise on the UK. It'll be more
difficult in other European countries.
