Hi all
sorry for delay, caught between meetings
Yesterday we met the EC, the were very positive and they will give us a slot at the ministerial conference to present the open declaration. Well done to all.
BUT DO NOT TELL ANYBODY YET because:
First, we need the official confirmation (within the next 2 days). Second, we want to "use" the news as a way to leverage more participation.

The next steps are as follows:
- by Sept 23rd we collect all proposals
- by Sept 30th Paul, me and anybody who is interested will draft ONE single proposal, based on all the proposals in the website, probably using a wiki tool or gDocs
- between Sept 30 and Oct 10th, we publish the draft proposal as commentable version online (tool to be decided yet)
- based on the comments received, we publish the final proposal and launch the endorsement campaign on facebook etc. (any proposal for how to do this?)

The reason for this change lies in the observations of Alberto and Tim. The platform is  not usable enough for a proper debate to happen. So in order to leverage wider participation we prefer to go with one single version, and have a good discussion about it.

Thanks and congrats to all. I am happy also because we are having some interesting conversations on the blog, so that participating is no longer effort but fun. I hope to have more!

Re: commentable version of the final document - I've put these
together for the UK government, such as the Digital Britain report,
and could throw something together for this, if needed.

David, just briefly, a side note. You've noticed this list is publicly archived, right?

That tool seemed pretty useful for this purpose, if I remember
correctly. ;-)

Hi all
a brief update while waiting for official confirmation  - trusting that nobody will leak the semi-public information :)

1) by the end of this week we collect all versions on mixedink
2) next week we work on the single version - help welcome. We thought about using a shared gDoc, or do you prefer wiki?
3) on oct 4th we publish it online for review until Oct 11th. Dave would be great if you can set it up, thanks. Only then we communicate that we are accepted in the conference.
4) by oct 18th we publish the revised version and we go for large scale endorsement. What is  the best way? A Facebook cause?

By the way, the EC accepted our request to have all members of the Steering Committee to be invited at the conference - but no cost coverage is possible. It is a strict invitation-only conference; it's a small thing but better than nothing. The EC also accepted this as a long term conversation, not a one-off exercise.

My main concern now is to get a good quality declaration. We need to work hard next week on it. Hope you all can help!

best
david

That's excellent news, David: well done!

...and it might be worth considering using http://etherpad.com/ for
the next phase of drafting.

All the best,

David

Well done, a pat on everybody's back!

Re the tool, I'll go with whatever you guys prefer. My preference goes
to wikimedia, because it has the Wikipedia look and feel, which sort
of conveys the right message. I would suggest somebody installs it on
their server, where it can stay up as a web page for reference, linked
from the eups20 blog,

Congrats, David!

We don´t we open a google site? , it´s a perfect mix between a google doc and a wiki. In the last months sites.google.com is my favourite collaborative work enviroment.

Agree with Alberto. If we could avoid requirement of a third party account, that would be my preference.

On a related (late) note, I fully agree with the decision on having 1-2 people leading the editing and others contributing. This is the way I'm used to this business at W3C and one that, IMHO, has been proven successful over the years. Unfortunately, this requires more work on the editor's side and high responsiveness but you guys are big enough! :)
