This brings us to X.25 error-messages when a ship doesn't respond: "Ship absent"
or even better "Ship sunk"!!! (or is this just folklore?)

BTW sounds a lot more fun than multiuser star-trek etc.

Absent is real. Sunk is folklore. My copy of the X-25 docs (section
5.2.3.1.1) has a table of encodings for the clearing cause field in
the clear indication packet. One of the entries (0x39) is 'Ship Absent' and
the footnote says 'Used in conjunction with mobile maritime service.'. Neil.
